This Is New
$15.05 BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.

$15.05 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist ...

| | Asante Bringing The Flame Home: From Havana To Africa CD (2001)
This Is New
$14.49 The problem with being a jazz purist is that jazz was never really pure. Jazz was always multicultural -- back when King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton were starting out, early Dixieland was influenced by everything from blues, ragtime, and gospel to European classical to African, Latin, and Caribbean rhythms. So instead of trying to hide jazz's multicultural nature, musicians should celebrate it -- which is what Asante does on Bringing the Flame Home: From Havana to Africa. Asante, a drummer from the African country of Ghana, is joined by Venezuelan pianist Benito Gonzales as well as saxophonist Joe Ford (of Fort Apache Band fame), bassist Gavin Fallow, and various percussionists. Together, this group of African, Latino, and American musicians examines the African/Latin/Caribbean connection in jazz. The music is, for the most part, instrumental post-bop, but it is post-bop that makes extensive use of African, Latin, and Caribbean rhythms. Everything ...
| | Eva Cassidy Other Side CD (1992)
This Is New
$14.19 Online CD shops where you can sample tracks before purchasing the disc are especially helpful with Chuck Brown, whose music is rarely programmed on radio. The Other Side consists of '40s and '50s supper-club sounds. Eva Cassidy sings on more than half of the tracks, soloing and performing a number of duets, including "You Don't Know Me," "I Could Have Told You So," and "I'll Go Crazy." The '60s deep soul classic "Dark End of the Street" is the most modern song. Lovers of '50s MOR will love this release; everyone else, will not. ~ Andrew Hamilton
Recorded at Chris Biondo's, Glendale, Maryland.
Personnel: Chuck Brown (vocals); Eva Cassidy (vocals, guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Dave Lourim, Keith Grimes (guitar); Dan Cassidy (violin); Amanda Wiliams, Lenny Williams (strings, piano, organ, vibraphone); ...

$25.59 Recorded in New York, New York in November & December 1957. Includes liner notes by Domingo G. Echevarria and Harry Sepulveda.
Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter and Domingo G. Echevarria (1991, BMG/Studio ID, New York, New York).

These glorious cuts from 1957 hardly require any introduction. Played by one of the very finest bands of the day, it's easy to see how this became the sizzling Afro-Cuban jazz that had Latinos and Anglos alike tearing it up on America's hippest dance floors. Mr. Puente does it all here, from composing many of the tunes to ...
