| | Billy Cobham Flight Time CD - Import Billy Cobham Discography of CDs
A lesser known Cobham recording that has only been available in the U.S. as an import. Cobham also seems to push guitarists to new heights (i.e. Tommy Bolin, John Abercrombie, John Scofield) and does so here with Barry Finnerty. Their interaction on the tune "Flight Time" is reminiscent of Cobham/Bolin on Spectrum. Yet, despite the intensity and chops of Finnerty and Cobham, this session is remarkably restrained thanks in large part to the thoughtful playing of keyboardist Don Grolnick. There is a definite sense of a band here, rather than just a collection of all-stars playing Billy Cobham songs; in fact, the only Cobham retread is "Antares" (from Magic). Whether it is Don Grolnick's piano solo on "6 Persimmons" or his opening duet with Barry Finnerty on "Princess," Cobham should get just as much credit for what he did not play. It is a shame that this unit did not become Cobham's regular band as this is one of his most cohesive efforts. ~ Robert Taylor
Only a few times in history has a musician been singled out as the world-class master of his instrument. Billy Cobham is one of those few artists. For over 30 years, he has received international acclaim as the total consummate drummer. However on this CD, the band as a whole is the attraction. It features Cobham, Barry Finnerty (guitar) and Don Grolnick (keyboard) blending their talents to create a stunning and unified sound. "It is a shame that this unit did not become Cobham's regular band as this is one of his most cohesive efforts." (Robert Taylor, ALL MUSIC GUIDE)
Billy Cobham's 1980 quartet, while fusion-oriented, was pretty versatile. Reflecting the interests of its leader, the group could romp through an uptempo blues like "Flight Time," be reflective on a ballad (the first half of "6 Persimmons"), or rock out on "Antares" and the well-titled "Jackhammer." The late Don Grolnick shows what a major loss his premature death was; Barry Finnerty displays his hot licks on guitar; bassist Tim Landers is supportive, funky, or swinging when called for; and Billy Cobham is intense in spots while also showing restraint. While not a classic release, the music on this recording has not become dated or lost its power. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Billy Cobham (drums); Barry Finnerty (guitar); Don Grolnick (keyboards); Tim Landers (bass guitar).

Purchase Flight Time CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Flight Time album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Flight Time CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Flight Time music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Flight Time songs
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Flight Time album
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical ...
