DEFINITIVE GROOVE is a strong statement to make in an album title, but in the case of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards's Chic, it's all too fitting: after all, their epoch-defining hit, "Good Times," was not only a smash on its own, but Edwards's bassline was immediately swiped by the likes of the Sugarhill Gang (on "Rapper's Delight") and Queen (on "Another One Bites The Dust") before becoming second only to James Brown's "Funky Drummer" as the most recognizable hip-hop sample ever. This two-disc, 30-track set contains all the band's hit singles in their original full-length versions, from the sardonic "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)," a thinly veiled attack on anti-disco racism, to the indelible smash "Le Freak" and beyond. Key album tracks and rarities are also included, making DEFINITIVE GROOVE a superlative anthology.

Definitive Groove Collection Music Definitive Groove Collection Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) SENSELESS!!! Get this collection! It was senseless that the party days (and nights) of such a fun era known as disco had to come to an abrupt end. (at least as far as some had told us)! This collection proves that the most fun was had during the days when artists produced quality music where there was no place for gimmicks, negativity and foul language. The music did the talking-and on these 2 discs it's not only talking, it's "SHOUTING"! A MUST for any true fan of fun, talented, "GOOD TIMES" music! Thorough My compliments, once again, to the Definitive Groove series. These collections are all two disc collections and quite complete. Any act worthy of an anthology collection should have two discs (though there are some notable exceptions). If I really wanted to be critical (I don't), I'd lament the omissions of 'A Warm Summer's Night' and 'Burn Hard', but this set includes: 'Chip Off The Old Block', 'Your Love Is Cancelled', Just Out Of Reach', 'Soup For One' and 'You Are Beautiful', which could've easily been neglected. If you were to only have one Chic set, this is the definitive groove, no doubt! Submitted by St.Davey (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Definitive Groove Collection songs
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey panel would probably not be able to figure out which song came from which album. What ...
| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
Definitive Groove Collection album
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, of this productive duo. "Running After You" falls into the former category, but their hit rendition of the Todd Rundgren tune "Love Is the Answer" is up there ...
| | England Dan Some Things Don't Come Easy CD (1978)
Definitive Groove Collection CD music
$10.65 If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they were fantastic at it. The hit single is defined, the production is compact, and the loose ends that make up all the other songs on Some Things Don't Come Easy pale in comparison. The song's hook and instrumentation are so radio-friendly that the 45 could be put on repeat and after the 30th spin not bore like many of the tracks here. Sure, ...
| | Doo Wop Shop CD (1992) (Import) United Kingdom
Definitive Groove Collection music CDs
$17.15 As a 30-song compilation of doo wop from the mid-'50s to the mid-'60s, this suffers both from inconsistency and unfavorable comparisons to numerous superior doo wop anthologies. There actually is a lot of good music here, but it's hard to figure what exactly the audience is for a disc that mixes classic familiar doo wop hits with smaller hits and downright flops. The hits on board here tend to be a little more on the cleaner and whiter side than those on the average doo wop comp, though not exclusively so. The roll call of those hits is fairly long: Dion & the Belmonts' "I Wonder Why," the Earls' "Remember Then," Randy & the Rainbows' "Denise," the Penguins' "Earth Angel," Curtis Lee's "Pretty Little Angel Eyes," Rosie & the Originals' "Angel Baby," the Teen Queens' "Eddie My Love," the Jive Five's "My True Story," the Crests' "The Angels Listened In," the Mystics' "Hushabye," Cathy Jean & the Roommates' "Please Love Me Forever," the Chimes' "Once in a While," and the Capris' "There's a Moon Out Tonight." Some ...
