Liner Note Author: Gary Tanenbaum. This scant Don Gibson compilation from American Legends features ten songs from the lauded country crooner's six decade career, all of which are later versions of some of his most beloved hits such as "Sweet Dreams," "Sea of Heartbreak," and "Oh Lonesome Me." There are countless Gibson collections out there, including the excellent Legend in My Time from Bear Family, that put this little square of deception to shame. ~ James Christopher Monger Mr. Lonesome Review

| | Merle Haggard 20 Number One Hits CD (2000)
Mr. Lonesome
$13.19 20 NUMBER ONE HITS contains re-recorded versions of Merle Haggard's classic hits. Compilation producer: Cary E. Mansfield. Recorded in 1994 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Brian Mansfield. Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering West, North Hollywood, California). Liner Note Authors: Colin Escott; Brian Mansfield. Recording information: 1994-1995. As the title suggests, 20 Number One Hits collects a fistful of Merle Haggard's best-loved (and highest charting) hits in this compilation released by Varese Sarabande. Arranged chronologically from his outlaw hit "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" in 1967 through 1981's "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink," this would seem like the ultimate collection for Haggard fans, but alas this is not the case. Due to rough and reckless livin', the singer was forced to file for bankruptcy in December of 1992 and in order to balance his debts Haggard sold his publishing rights to Sony/Tree. He spent a large portion of time in the mid- to late '90s re-recording his biggest songs, many of which ended up here. The liner notes infer that the tracks appearing on this collection are improvements over the original singles because the wisdom of the years adds a worldly knowledge to the songs. Unfortunately, what this maturity replaces is the fire and guts that made Haggard one of the most rebellious members of the Bakersfield scene. The man who once professed to be proud to be an "Okie From Muskogee" now sounds like he would be quite at home in a slick Nashville studio. A mediocre release, only because the gritty words of a ...

Photographers: Terry O'Neill; David Larkham. Arranger: Gene Page. Sitting atop the charts in 1975, Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection. It's no coincidence that it's their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin's inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving. What's best about the record is that it works best of a piece -- although it entered the charts at number one, this only had one huge hit in "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," which sounds even better here, since it tidily fits into the musical and lyrical themes. And although the musical skill on display here is dazzling, as it bounces between country and hard rock within the same song, this is certainly a grower. The album needs time to reveal its treasures, but once it does, it rivals Tumbleweed in terms of sheer consistency and eclipses it in scope, capturing John and Taupin at a pinnacle. They collapsed in hubris and excess not long afterward -- Rock of the Westies, which followed just months later is as scattered as this is focused -- but this remains a testament to the strengths of their creative partnership. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine One of Elton John's many 1970s pop gems, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC & THE DIRT BROWN COWBOY is a classic album filled with well-written, catchy tunes. The most famous song from this record is the radio hit, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." A bitter tune about a badly entangled relationship, John's lyric rejoices in an 11th-hour triumph of freedom. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC also features John's well-known version of the Lennon/McCartney favorite "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." ...

| | Dean Martin Some Enchanted Evening CD (2000)
Mr. Lonesome
$9.79 A compilation of 18 tracks recorded in the '50s, probably on the Martin & Lewis radio show, Some Enchanted Evening offers little more than Dean Martin's ebullient voice. The material isn't among his most popular, though collectors may be interested in a few spare novelties that were never recorded for Capitol or Reprise, like the salacious "Take Your Girlie to the Movies." Add to that the absence of documentation and the spotty sound that radio recordings often have, and the album sinks still further. Martin, though, always takes the proper tone with these pleasantries, capering through the songs -- whether it's "Room Full of Roses" ...
