| | Nancy Wilson Turned To Blue CD Nancy Wilson Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
That diva Nancy Wilson was still going strong in the early 2000s, some 40 years after her heyday in the mid 1960s, is a testament to both the appeal of her music and the unassailable worth of her talent. Wilson's voice is expectedly weathered on 2006's TURNED TO BLUE, and she leans more toward adult contemporary pop than the jazz of her early career, but these changes matter little given the singer's stirring performances. The set list is comprised mostly of ballads, with a few twists (the Maya Angelou poem in the title track), and standards ("I'll Be Seeing You") thrown in for good measure. A host of top-shelf instrumentalists bring added sparkle to a stylish, classy outing from this vocal legend.
Personnel: Nancy Wilson (vocals); Hubert Laws (flute); James Moody, Andy Snitzer, Tom Scott, Bob Mintzer (tenor saxophone); Rufus Reid (upright bass).
Down Beat (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It there ever was a recent disc to illustrate the art of luxuriating in one's golden years without the overblown melodrama, TURNED TO BLUE is that perfect case study." JazzTimes (p.115) - "[S]he continues to cover all the bases, often circling them as she hits a umber of homers....Ms. Wilson is swinging elegance personified." Nancy Wilson Turned To Blue Songs Turned To Blue Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Keep it going Nancy I bought this CD of Nancy. I realize she is older now, however, that doesn't change her style, elegance and carisma. Nancy, my friend and I thank you for continuing to entertain us with much charm, class and beauty. Nancy Wilson is one class act Nancy's latest album is smooth, jazzy, and quite elegant; much like Nancy herself. The song, "Turned To Blue," which is a poem by Maya Angelou put to music, is a must-have for any fan of beautiful music and lyrics. Nancy's voice is as stylish and beautiful as ever. In fact, it seems she has improved with age, if that is even possible since she is one of the all-time greats in my humble opinion. This is a wonderful album filled with lovely, jazzy vocals. Sit back and enjoy! Submitted by Joe (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Turned To Blue album
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to the fatalism of the chain gang song "My Captain," Muddy's voice expresses ...
| | Nancy Wilson R.S.V.P. CD (2004)
Turned To Blue CD music
$7.19 The sultry "An Older Man Is Like an Elegant Wine," for example, shows that she has lost none of her sumptuous, ballad-perfect timbre, but the bop-inflected ease of her phrases on "Day In, Day Out" remind us that her up-tempo exuberance is still jumping, too. A string of all-star guests--George Shearing, Toots Thielemans, Phil Woods, and Gary Burton, among others--make the collection sparkle even brighter, and her duets with R&B stars Kenny Lattimore and Ivan Lins may win converts from a younger generation. But as the note-perfect "Blame It on My Youth" announces, this is Wilson's show, and a fine, memorable one at that.
Even given her dalliances with R&B and pop material during her long career, Nancy Wilson is unquestionably one of the legends of vocal jazz. R.S.V.P. (which here stands ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Turned To Blue music CDs
$14.99 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. ...

Turned To Blue CD music
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many ...

Keith Tippett's debut album as a bandleader was and remains a rather remarkable affair in that it was the first engagement of British young people who came up in rock, pop, and blues bands to play jazz. Tippett himself is a classically trained musician who came to jazz via Mingus, George Russell, Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders, but his compositional element also owes to composers such as Darius Milhaud, Vaughan Williams, and Frederick Delius. His front-line group contains the Soft Machine's Elton Dean, plus Nick Evans and Marc Charig, while his rhythm section contains drummer Alan Jackson and bassist Jeff Clyne -- whose bowing sensibilities are not only highly developed but provocative as well. All eight tracks were composed and arranged by Tippett, but his penchant for writing for a particular group of musicians is very keen here: ...
| | Thumpin' And Bumpin' CD (1996)
Turned To Blue songs
$17.99 This interesting CD collection has 25 selections recorded for the Victor label during a 19-month period. James P. Johnson's group (with Fats Waller on second piano and cornetist King Oliver) performs two numbers; there is the lone four-song date by Cecil Scott's Bright Boys ("Lawd Lawd" and the eccentric "In a Corner" are classics), along with the only six titles ever made by Bubber Miley's Mileage Makers, seven numbers by groups led by trumpeter Dave Nelson, and three songs apiece from Wooding's Grand Central Red Caps and Eubie Blake. Most of the music falls in the realm of hot dance music, but the jazz content is high, and the Miley and Wooding sides in particular ...

Turned To Blue music CDs
$6.75 A country performer who died just as his star was rising, Keith Whitley is well represented on this Legacy collection, which draws on the singer's popular latter-day recordings. Unlike many of his contemporaries in the late 1980s, the Kentucky-born singer generally opted for a more traditional sound that often recalled George Jones, as revealed on hit ballads such as the pleading "Don't Close Your Eyes," the heartbreaking "I Wonder Do You Think of Me," and "Til a Tear Becomes a Rose," a duet that was completed by his wife, Lorrie Morgan, after the singer's 1989 death from alcohol poisoning. Although there ...
