Over the course of several albums, Austrian black metal act Summoning perfected a particularly widescreen version of progressive black metal, a style that more recently has been infused with an almost medieval strain of twiddly folk music of the lutes 'n' flutes variety. Oath Bound dials back slightly on the Ren Faire aspects, but fans expecting a complete return to the pulverizing sound of Lugburz or Dol Guldor may be confused yet further by this album. THE SOUND OF JAZZ is the soundtrack to a December 8, 1957 CBS-TV broadcast called the "Sound Of Jazz."
The Sound of Jazz, originally aired Sunday, December 8, 1957, on CBS, has never been duplicated in capturing such a wide array of jazz musicians from various styles -- swing, cool, modern -- sometimes cross pollinating in a lively yet casual atmosphere. Jazz critics Whitney Balliett and Nat Hentoff selected the musicians, set them up in a studio in front of a live audience, and told the cameramen to simply follow them as they jammed, talked, and hung out. Performances include the Henry "Red" Allen All-Stars featuring Pee Wee Russell and Coleman Hawkins; Billie Holiday with the Mal Waldron All-Stars featuring Lester Young, Doc Cheatam, Ben Webster, and Hawkins; Count Basie's All-Stars featuring Jimmy Rushing; and the Jimmy Giuffre Trio. While the entire soundtrack is enjoyable, two pieces stand above the others for their unique and historic pairings: Traditional meets modern with the clarinet pairing of Pee Wee Russell and Jimmy Giuffre on "Blues," and "Fine and Mellow" finds Billie Holiday briefly reunited with friend Lester Young for the last time. On Man in the Moon, a reunited and revitalized core L.A. Guns lineup spice up their '80s West Coast sleaze rock with some pop and modern rock elements. With the mostly original lineup (Phil Lewis on vocals, Tracii Guns on guitar, Steve Riley on drums, Mick Cripps on keyboards, and bassist Muddy) getting back together in the studio for the first time in over half a decade, L.A. Guns were probably hoping to relive the glory days of Cocked and Loaded. The results are a little mixed on this 2001 Spitfire Records release. Guns' guitar work is as fierce as ever and Lewis' whiney, but confident vocals are appropriately true to the singer's '80s rock past. But these two critical elements don't always work together on Man in the Moon, due in large part to some less-than-inspired material. While the clean, tight production has a positive, immediate effect on the muscular riffs, it also exposes Lewis' less-than-accurate pitch, as the singer attempts melodies that seem ill-suited for his voice. A bit of a mixed bag, Man in the Moon has a few bright spots, but unfortunately can't compete with L.A. Guns' prime late-'80s material. ~ Vincent Jeffries
