The controversial film extremist groups tried to stop with death threats, arson, and riots, but director Deepa Mehta would not be silenced. Extras include director's commentary, making of featurette, and behind the scenes featurette. When Deepa Mehta first began filming WATER in 2000, angry fundamentalist mobs burned her sets and threatened her life. The Indian government claimed it could not protect her, and the project had to wait four years before finally filming in Sri Lanka. Her film has raised the ire of extremists because it challenges the Hindu customs that dictate that widows, considered half-dead after the loss of their husbands, must be closeted in holy ashrams--a practice that still exists today. Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of eight-year old Chuyia, whose husband dies before she even meets him. Her parents shave her head and whisk her away to a house of widows where the women sleep on the ground and beg in the streets to earn their puny portion of rice. Chuyia, feisty and resilient, comes into this world like a ray of light, and soon the women are rethinking their mute acceptance of their fate. Her closest friend and ally is the lovely Kalyani, and soon a forbidden romance begins to develop between Kalyani and Narayana, a young Brahmin man who, following the teachings of Gandhi, has denounced injustice.
The film is sumptuously beautiful, Chuyia is utterly winsome, and despite the harsh social issues at its heart, it often feels light and lively: Chuyia and Kalyani play games and dance, Chuyia steals sweets for a dying old widow, the women dance and paint each other's faces during a color festival, and the Cinderella-story romance between Kalyani and Narayana shimmers with the promise of salvation and happiness. Mehta, however, knows it would be disingenuous to allow such an easy resolution to such a dire situation, and the final chapter of WATER takes a tragic turn.

Water Reviews: 3 stars out of 5 -- "[M]ehta's use of colour and landscape brings visual splash."-- Matthew Leyland, Total Film "Lisa Ray is moving as the ill-fated Kalyani, and Seema Biswas endows Chuyia's protector Shakuntala with the slow-burning strength she brought to her title-role debut in BANDIT QUEEN."-- Philip Kemp, Sight and Sound "[A]n exquisite film....Serene on the surface, yet roiling underneath....WATER flows with the simplicity of a fairy tale."
-- Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times "WATER cascades shimmeringly from one inspired, often bitterly ironic and always illuminating incident to another."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "Deepa Mehta has made a haunting and disturbing film....It emerges as life-affirming..."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today Water | List Price | $14.98 (You save $4.49) | | Studio | 20th Century Fox | | Orig Year | 2006 | | All Time Sales Rank | 12565 | | CD Universe Part number | 7247638 | | Catalog number | 2236618 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Aug 29, 2006 | | Rating | PG (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | mature thematic material involving sexual situations, and for brief drug use | | Running Time | 117 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Subtitled |

Water review
$6.49 Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone

$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and ...

Water DVD
$10.75 Ostensibly a teen fright-fest about a vengeful ghost, WHISPERING CORRIDORS follows in the best horror tradition of using the supernatural for displaced social commentary. The film is an illustration of the growing gap in Korean society between the values of the youth and the older generations, focused around the misogyny and cutthroat competition in the educational system. It became a huge hit in its native country after word got out that the ministry of education wanted to ban it for its critical viewpoint. The plot concerns a series of grisly murders at an all-girls school, which the administration has tried to cover up as suicides. A former student, who has returned as a teacher, finds something familiar about the deaths, and ...
