It's hard to vote against the Staple Singers, and even though this ten-track set of gospel pieces drawn from a live concert is a bit on the brief side, there's still enough of Pops Staples' chicken-scratch guitar and Mavis Staples' soaring vocals to make it all stick to the wall. Highlights include the opener, "Glory, Glory Hallelujah!," which brims with an obvious and bubbling joy, the decidedly country gospel feel of "Jacob's Ladder," a solid reading of the traditional "Wade in the Water," and Pops' trademark reverb-laced guitar work on the closing track, "He." What you don't get here is the secular-leaning gospel-soul hybrid that most people think of when they think of the Staple Singers, which means this isn't an ideal introductory collection, but these folks never recorded a bad album (or gave a bad concert, for that matter), so if In Praise of Him isn't essential, it isn't a throwaway, either. ~ Steve Leggett
The Staple Singers: Roebuck "Pops" Staples (vocals, guitar); Mavis Staples (vocals).

In Praise Of Him songs
$12.69 This album, Second Skin, is Ashley Cleveland's fifth. With it the Grammy and Dove Award-winning singer has pulled off another lineup of impressive CCM to carry fans rocking through the first track to the last. Kenny Greenberg served as producer for this offering, but as usual, Cleveland did things her way, making it hard for many to figure out the genre in which some of her music should be listed. This probably isn't the kind of stuff your grandmother would like to hear on a Sunday morning in church, though most teenagers wouldn't mind at all. Cleveland took a long break from her recording career after she finished her previous album, You Are There, so she had plenty of time to reinvigorate before starting work on this one. She wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on Second Skin. Some of the tracks on the ...
| | Lamb Between Darkness And Wonder CD (2003)
In Praise Of Him album
$14.65 Once the most intriguing act fusing electronica with singer/songwriter pop, Lamb unfortunately impress much less on their fourth album than they did in the past. While Louise Rhodes' vocals still lie on the acceptable side of eccentric, Andy Barlow's productions have been defanged; no longer surprising and innovative, they exist as merely proper frameworks for the songs. The long roster ...

$13.35 With his clean-cut all-American looks, star-making moniker, James Taylor-lush voice, and résumé that includes shared stages with Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, Michael Feinstein, and Chrissie Hynde (in addition to starring off-Broadway in Our Sinatra), singer/songwriter and keyboardist Johnny Rodgers seemed destined for big things even before the release of his spectacular debut. But the real achievement of this glorious whirlwind of 12 original songs is the way it celebrates artistic independence in a world of cookie-cutter artists and hyper-restrictive radio formatting. That is, ...

| | Tamara Little Space Left CD (1998)
In Praise Of Him album
$10.15 Acoustic singer-songwriters are so thick on the ground these days that it can take a real force of effort to listen to one more. We've all made the effort before and been burned, granting a half hour of our scarce attention and being rewarded with tuneless, meandering chord progressions and lyrics that range from pretentiously abstract to maddeningly solipsistic. Well, trust me: this one's worth the effort. Tamara sings with a voice that's light but not wimpy, a little like a cross between Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter, and she writes songs that pull you in by virtue of smart lyrics that never settle for mere cleverness and tunes that pull you along by the hand. "Oscar & Bud" is a touching ode to the two brothers who share an apartment in her building and have followed her career with paternal affection; there are several songs that discuss sartorial issues, one of which is the thoroughly charming and subtly seductive "2 Dresses"; best of all is "Cool Blue & Rolling," a flat-out declaration of romantic bliss (and you thought only Cindy Kallett could write happy love songs!). These last are balanced out somewhat by "Your Mother Hates Me," which is rather brutal for all of its coolness of delivery, and "I Wish My Apartment Building Allowed Dogs," which is a barely subtle allegory. All of it is tight, tuneful and wonderful to hear. (The disc is self-produced; for more information, e-mail t2dresses@aol.com.) ~ Rick Anderson
"A Little Space Left", Tamara's self-released CD produced by Henry Hey ( henryhey ), has been well-received and played on numerous college and public radio stations. In addition to that recording, Tamara has also appeared on 3 Fast Folk Musical Magazine recordings and as a background vocalist other artist's recordings. A new CD of original music entitled "Right This Minute", produced by Art Hays ( arthays ) will be available on CD Baby in the next couple of weeks.Tamara Hey is a singer-songwriter whose material ranges from vignettes about her friends and ...
