| | Laura Pausini Primavera In Anticipo CD (2008)
Gook Times CD music
$13.79 Italian vocalist Laura Pausini became a worldwide sensation during the first 10 years of her recording career (although her success in America is minimal compared to Europe and Latin America). PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO, released in 2008 in both Italian and Spanish versions, extends Pausini's command over the adult contemporary form, offering up 14 tracks ...

| | Celtic Woman Greatest Journey: Essential Collection CD (2008) Bonus Tracks
Gook Times songs
$15.15 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to the mournful yet poppily uplifting indigenous folk of "You Raise Me Up."

| | World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's A Real Thing: The Funky, Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa CD (2005)
Gook Times CD music
$10.55 Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy ...

| | Harv Must CD (1999) (Import) Sweden
Gook Times CD music
$24.95 When American musicians visit Stockholm, Göteborg, and other Swedish cities, they feel right at home because there is no shortage of musical styles that originated in the U.S. From jazz to heavy metal to dance-pop, Swedish artists have long since mastered all things North American. But if those musicians want to explore the U.S.' European heritage while abroad, they should also check out some traditional Swedish fiddle music. For centuries, fiddle playing has been a part their culture and it continues to excite young Scandinavian musicians. Two of the young Swedish players who emerged in the 1990s were Magnus Stinnerbom and Daniel Sandén-Warg. Collectively, they are the duo Harv, which takes a very traditional approach on 1999's entirely instrumental Must. The two (who are joined by guitarist Roger Tallroth and percussionist Björn Tollin) look like they could be members of a Swedish punk band, but this album contains the type of polskas and waltzes that generation after generation has embraced in Sweden. And you don't have to be from Sweden to feel that this ...

$16.29 This all wouldn't have been possible without Harry Edison and Fred Green you know. They know as much about the kind of music that I feel as any men who ever lived. They have earned - with no caterwauling about travel, working conditions, the plight of the "jazzman" in America today, and related rot- the respect and ...
