| | Roots Game Theory CD Roots Discography of CDs
Despite what critics might have said about their two previous efforts, true hip-hop heads know that the Roots never fell off. On their seventh studio album, Philadelphia's favorite sons continue to elevate their signature sound that has for years appealed to rap purists and staggered the more critical listeners who love to lament the lack of musicianship in hip-hop.
Fans who were worried about how the crew's style would mesh with the Def Jam formula will be relieved from the gate, as the intro (an eerily ambient reworking of the Jay Dee-produced "Fantastic" intro) gives way to the upbeat, drum-driven "False Media." Equally relieving to longtime Roots fans is the return of Malik B whose aggressive delivery again provides balance to Black Thought's more measured cadence. On the whole, GAME THEORY contains heavier subject matter; the politics of the day pervade virtually every track, while the tone ranges from heated urgency ("Don't Feel Right" and "In The Music") to the uplifting and soulful ("Baby" and "Long Time") to sad introspection ("Atonement" and the bonus track tribute to the late Jay Dee). GAME THEORY is hip-hop with a message and shows us an angrier, more impassioned group of artists eager to tackle the issues confronting their community, yet still doing it with true bounce.
Japanese pressing includes one bonus track, 'Bread & Butter'. Def Jam. 2006.Rolling Stone (p.100) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "For every head-nodding beat, GAME THEORY has a head-turning treat, from the 'om' chant intro on the gospel-style 'Baby' to the melancholy Radiohead sample of 'Atonement'." Rolling Stone (p.104) - Ranked #18 in Rolling Stone's "The Top 50 Albums Of 2006" -- "GAME THEORY is classic studio Roots, full of invention and left turns." Spin (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "GAME THEORY is The Roots at their heaviest. Keyboards that once draped a gauzy texture over their funk excursions now elbow their way into the mix." Spin (p.59) - Ranked #23 in Spin's "The 40 Best Albums of 2006" -- "[A] suite of intensely glowering songs..." Entertainment Weekly (p.p.77) - "GAME THEORY is their toughest, weightiest, and most uncommercial effort yet....This is the rare hip-hop release that's both gripping and touching." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.123) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] focused, intelligent record....The reshuffle yields some of their best material with assaults like 'In The Music' and the J Dilla tribute 'Can't Stop This'..." Vibe (p.212) - "THEORY is a masterfully crafted, sobering wake-up call....GAME THEORY boasts top-notch craftsmanship -- mixing and sequencing do count....but it's continuity that makes this album unique." XXL (Magazine) (p.173) - "[T]he Roots have continued to evolve and experiment with their sound. With tracks ranging from high velocity boast fests to spacey jams..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This ferociously politicized record recalls the urgency of Public Enemy's NATION OF MILLIONS....A focused tour de force..." Game Theory album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Game Theory CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way ...

| | Kazu Matsui Bamboo CD (2002)
Game Theory album
$13.25 As producer for his popular keyboardist/composer wife, Keiko Matsui, Kazu Matsui has not only orchestrated mystical sounds for her classically inspired melodies, he has also contributed his own spiritual touch via the native Japanese shakuhachi flute. He's contributed these to many movie soundtracks as well, from Willow to Legends of the Fall. His debut on Narada -- following Deep Blue, his wife's popular first outing for the label -- is very much consistent with the less pop-oriented, more expansive and atmospheric side of Keiko. These aren't so much strict compositions as they are unique and mystical meditations which surround his flute with brooding atmospheres, sweeping orchestrations, and occasional passages by Keiko. The opening track, "Shrine" (a titular throwback to her Full Moon and the Shrine disc), begins with dramatic percussive shakuhachi lines before Kazu creeps into the background behind other Eastern-flavored keyboard sounds; he then gives way to Keiko's improvisational passages as a bassline broods in the distance. "Black Bird & the Bamboo Forest" is like a nighttime jungle excursion by husband and wife, her thoughtful piano passages becoming more emotional as he echoes in the background and the distant strings boom. There is a tendency for Keiko's melodies to dominate at times, but this is balanced by other tunes, like the ...
| | Fairport Convention What We Did On Our Holiday CD (1969) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Germany
Game Theory CD music
$14.45 Remastered reissue with three bonus songs: "Throwaway Street Puzzle," "You're Gonna Need My Help," and "Some Sweet Day."
An album that revels in an embarrassment of influences which the band bind, making their own. This was the Fairport that ran with the psychedelic underground, flexing their muscles, a slumbering entity about to wake. This was their beatnik phase, producing such evergreens as Sandy Denny's beautiful 'Fotheringay', the first tangible examples of electrified trad in 'Nottamun Town' and 'She Moves Through The Fair' - neither song, incidentally, British. More significantly, Richard Thompson began to move in his own mysterious way, gifting 'Meet On The Ledge' which has since become their signature. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life and this collection adroitly exploits just that.
Digitally ...
