Timepeace album
$14.59 When Terry Callier returned to the music scene as an active participant in 1998, after 20 years in self-imposed exile, he jumped headlong into the recording and touring process. His first two recordings, the fine Timepeace and the less-than-satisfying LifeTime, both had songs worthy of anything Callier ever wrote during the 1960s or 1970s. The live album, Alive on Mr. Bongo from 2001, is a testament to that. But finding a producer who could properly illustrate the vast subtleties in Callier's work, which effortlessly blurs the boundaries between jazz, pop, soul, and poetry, proved difficult in the studio. On Speak Your Peace, Callier has found the perfect working mates in Jean-Paul Maunick and Marc Mac (from 4Hero), two men who understand that his work is more about nuance than statement, sense impression than solid image, poetry than prose. Callier's glorious voice and wonderfully fluid acoustic guitar are front and center in the mixes of both men. Mac accents the skeletal angle of Callier's compositions, as on "Monuments of Mars." He underscores them with gentle rhythms, ambient sounds, well-placed strings, hand drums, and space, allowing the poetic, moral message of Callier's vision to come through unimpeded. Maunick's production techniques, as evidenced on all but three of the album's tracks, ranges; there are ...
| | Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds CD (1961) Remastered
Timepeace CD music
$8.79 This 1961 release may be significant in the vast canon of jazz recordings if only because it predates John Coltrane's forays into Eastern modal music. Coltrane didn't really explore the connection between jazz and Eastern musical styles until A LOVE SUPREME. Certainly, it is widely accepted that Coltrane's 1965 landmark albums, TRANSITION, KULU SE MAMA, and ASCENSION firmly established him as the main practitioner of Eastern influenced modal jazz. However, on Lateef's EASTERN SOUNDS, we hear the tenor man forging new territory years prior to Coltrane's experiments. Indeed, Lateef draws many fine musical parallels between the music of the Orient and American jazz on this outing.
Lateef's experiments are quite successful ...
| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Timepeace music CDs
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Victoria" -- and they're mercifully absent from the slower tunes, songs that benefit from the gentle layered harmonies. In comparison to most orchestral and choral rock albums, these arrangements are subtle and sensitive, providing a nice counterpart for the surprising dose of rock & roll, both things ...
| | Rosemary Clooney Songs From White Christmas (And Other Yuletide Favorites) CD (1997)
Timepeace songs
$5.99 All the material on Songs from White Christmas (And Other Yuletide Favorites) was recorded in the mid-'50s, when Rosemary Clooney was at something of a peak. Her voice was supple, her popularity high, and she was working with such luminaries as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Here, she doesn't flex her jazz muscles, ...

| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Timepeace CD music
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ...
