Ella Pennewell was born in Arizona and grew up in Oakland CA. She started singing at the age of four. As an adult, she formed two bands called the natural sounds and Phase Four. Ella began singing in the hottest spots in and around the bay area and abroad. A dynamic soulful singer that grabs your inner feeling with her songs with a strong Gospell sound but with a smooth velvity touch to the ear. She has worked with and open shows for such greats as BILL "SUMMER TIME" HEMMONS, RUFUS THOMAS, CARLA THOMAS, BOBBY BLUE BLAND, VERNON GARRETT, MISSISSIPPI JOHNNY WATERS, JIMMY McCRACKLIN, JIMMY WITHERSPOONPETE ESCAVETTO, BUDDY ACE, JESSIEJAMES, JOHNNY TAYLOR.Julien Vaught was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and grew up in New York City. While performing at a Brooklyn nightclub, he was discovered by the "Flamingo's", and later joined the group. The Flamingo's were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 1, 2001. He has toured nationally and internationally performing with such artists as: Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Smokey Robinson, Temptations, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Manhattans, Bobby Blue Bland, the late Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and numerous others. He has done extensive session work with B.B. King, Sara Vaughn, Wilbert Harrison and other great musicians and entertainers.Julien has performed at various Blues Festivals and the Monterey Jazz Festival. He is currently performing in night clubs throughout California and the Bay Area. Julien Vaught works with Ella Pennewell who just released their first CD together Titled "THAT'S THE WAY IT IS", which consists of Rhythm & Blues Pop and Jazzy sounds. $12.39 In his powerfully insightful book of blues-inspired poetry Fattening Frogs for Snakes -- Delta Sound Suite, John Sinclair cites blues and jazz scholar Robert Palmer as a source for the theory that the linguistic taproots of the word "boogie" probably reach back to West Africa, as the Hausa "buga" and the Mandingo "bug" both mean "to beat" as in "to beat a drum." This makes sense given the rhythmic potency of boogie-woogie, a style that emerged during the early 20th century among Southern black laborers who lived, toiled, and partied near the very bottom of the U.S. social hierarchy, usually living in an environment that was secluded from the rest of the population and often engaging in the production of turpentine. There are other distinct levels of meaning and purpose here: the subject of blackness, the act of partying in order to blow off steam, and the performer's utility function as a provider of music in order to keep the participants from brawling.
