Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts album
$13.09 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues ...

Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts album
$13.45 One of heavy metal's great lost bands resurfaces in this follow-up to its previous best-of collection, FIRST DAZE HERE. Based in Washington, D.C., Pentagram existed in various forms during the 1970s and '80s, never achieving anything but local recognition. This collection of demo and live recordings captures the band at its rawest, sounding surprisingly contemporary on cuts like "Wheel of Fortune," while "Show 'Em How" is a stunning display of unique blues power. The band displays its pre-Led Zeppelin roots with a cover of the Yardbirds' "Little Games," showing on "Yes I Do" that it also had pop smarts to spare, while "Virgin Death" is a masterly demonstration of ...
| | Troggs Trogglodynamite CD (1966) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Germany
Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts CD music
$18.79 1966's TROGGODYNAMITE is a fine second album by U.K. garage-rockers the Troggs, including "I Can Only Give You Everything," the spooky "Cousin Jane" and a rave-up cover of Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie."
German remaster includes both sides of four contemporaenous singles.
The Troggs' second U.K. album bore the hallmarks of a rushed affair, comprised largely of substandard original material and covers, and not even including a hit to stand out from the crowd. Only one of the tracks ("Cousin Jane") was even issued in the U.S. in the 1960s, a shocking state of affairs for a British group that had recently topped the American charts, although a few would appear on later compilations (Archeology has five of the songs). Part of the problem was that the group didn't have enough good original compositions to merit an album's worth of material, necessitating the enlistment of other songwriters (including Albert Hammond for "Meet Jacqueline" and their manager, Larry Page) who largely weren't up to the task. Most of the disc is surprisingly tame, with little of the crunch or roar that motored their best classics, or (with the exception of the lovely "Cousin Jane") the left-field delicate balladry they were wont to have up their sleeve. The terrific cover of Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything" is, other than "Cousin Jane," the album's lone first-rate track, and both are available on Archeology (for that matter, both were on the excellent double-LP Sire compilation The Vintage Years). ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Gong Angel's Egg (Radio Gnome Invisible, PT. 2) CD (1973) (Import) Japan; Remastered; Mini LP Sleeve
Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts music CDs
$37.55 In retrospect, it's hard to believe both FLYING TEAPOT and its successor ANGELS EGG were released within months of each other in 1973. Each is an elaborate, distinct musical statement. ANGEL'S EGG is the second installment in Gong's legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy," and it expands upon the ground broken by TEAPOT admirably. Though the band was still pursuing their spacy art-rock direction, the sound here became simultaneously jazzier and more ethereal. Didier Malherbe's sax and flute took a more active role, as did Steve Hillage's elaborate guitar textures.
An important personnel shift had also occured with the arrival of drummer Pierre Moerlen, mallet percussionist Mirielle Bauer and bassist ...
