This 2 CD collection features Dick Haymes's two-year tenure with Capitol in the mid-1950s. Although relatively brief, he produced two of the most eloquent ballad albums ever recorded. This album was compiled and mastered with Musicologist ...
As good as it gets This set offers on CD all 24 tracks from two of the best albums of popular singing ever made - "Rain or Shine" and "Moondreams," both arranged by Ian Bernard along with Johnny Mandel. These great American standards have never been sung better, up there in quality with Sinatra's Capitol ballad recordings of the same period and have been compared favorably with such as Wee Small Hours and Close to You. In spite of the brilliance of this music, for a variety of reasons that have been written about in detail elsewhere, they did not result in the Haymes comeback that was warranted. This CD is a treasure. The only negative for me is the bonus tracks. They don't fit with these two concept albums. It's good to have heard them along with the outtakes, but they do detract.
