(1 Customer Review)
A few years after declaring himself "King of Dancehall," Beenie Man reaffirms his place at the top of the dancehall game with the manifesto that is his 2006 album, UNDISPUTED. With beat work from dancehall giants Don Corleon and Tony Kelly as well as hip-hop superproducer Scott Storch, Beenie commands each track with more than enough lyrical swagger and braggadocio to challenge any of his ragamuffin peers. UNDISPUTED also features appearances from Akon, Lady Saw, Randy, Brooke Valentine, and Voltio.
Beenie Man rightly proclaimed himself, King Of The Dancehall, a couple years ago and no one in the battle-based culture batted an eye-lash. Why? Because when it comes to chats and riddems, Beenie Man is the alpha and the omega. That is, the 33-year-old Kingston native, born Moses Davis, but better known ‘round the world as Beenie Man, is the dancehall movement personified.Spin (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Relying on savvy Jamaican producers and his own rapid-fire wit, he once again slyly imbues irresistible club beats with infectious bad-boy charisma." Entertainment Weekly (p.79) - "The hardcore dancehall cuts are thrilling..." -- Grade: B- Q (p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The bouncing ragga rhythms of 'Hmm Hmm', klaxon horns of 'Dutty Wine Gal' featuring R&B singer Brooke Valentine, and lightning-quick chat on 'Jamaican Ting' are thrillingly energetic." | | Nas Illmatic CD (1994)
Undisputed CD music
$6.09 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic sense of on-the-street wordplay, his disrespect for the high time and the empty rhyme that distinguishes ILLMATIC. When Nas rocks the mic, it's not a hedonist's wet dream, but a depiction of urban hope and despair, and thanks to Nas's poetic insights, he soon transports you there (in a manner seldom seen in black pop since the days of Stevie's INNERVISIONS and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOIN' ON?).

| | Isaac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Anniversary Edition; Remastered
Undisputed music CDs
$9.65 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
A staff songwriter with the legendary Stax label, Isaac Hayes, with partner David Porter, composed material for many of the company's artists, including Sam And Dave, Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. Frustrated with this backroom role, he began recording in his own right, and with Hot Buttered Soul, redefined the notion of soul music. Although the tracks were lengthy, there was no sense of self-indulgence, each one evolving over sensual rhythms and taut arrangements. Hayes' vocal anticipated the 'rap' genre of Barry White and Millie Jackson ...

| | Twista Category F5 CD (2009)
Undisputed album
$11.39 A half-decade after breaking through to the mass public as a cagey veteran with the smash "Slow Jams," the "world's fastest rapper" continues to consistently drop some of the most downright interesting records in the hip-hop universe. 2009's CATEGORY F5 is quite possibly Twista's tightest record to date. The album is both a whirlwind of language and a bloodletting, a reminder that the rapid-fire rapper possesses one of the most keen (and often underrated) wits in the game as well as one of its darkest minds. Twista is of the streets, but his task is not to extol the glory of the game, but to impassively chronicle the carnage through the 3-D glasses of his own messed-up mind. There's a born-into-it undercurrent to his narrative, his super-speedy flow acting as a subliminal machine gun, spit-firing ...
| | Dexter Gordon Swedish Nights CDs (Import) Import; Denmark
Undisputed CD music
$24.49 While living in Europe, France, and Denmark, to be exact, Dexter Gordon made many recordings for the Steeplechase label, in studios and on trips to Switzerland and Sweden, performing with "local" rhythm sections and some American expatriates like himself. A regular partner for the tenor saxophonist in the early to mid-'70s was the quite able pianist Lars Sjösten, who was able to keep up with Gordon in terms of both musicianship and stamina. For these dates live in Sweden, Gordon really elongates five standards, two ballads, and two snippets of "The Theme" over a two-hour-plus double-CD set. Sjösten's quartet backs up Gordon, with the fine drummer Per Hulten, and trumpeter Rolf Reicson, who for the most part abdicated his front line position to let Gordon wail away. The bop tunes range from 17-18 minutes for the first set, and 20-26 for the second, with the ballads being a little more concise at around ten minutes. These extended takes, which are pretty well recorded considering the pre-digital time period, show an inspired ...
| | P I C Sexy Picnic CD (2003)
Undisputed music CDs
$7.99 P.I.C came to life in 1992 in a NYU film school mockumentary about a rap crew with ridiculous and often demented opinions on music and race. To collect the footage necessary to meet the prestigious film school's project requirements, cast members Sulu, Rice and Un-G decided to endorse these absurd views - collectively known as "p.i." - on stage at venerable New York City music venues. Armed with a home stereo amplifier, turntables, an upright piano, some lo-fi karaoke microphones and songs mostly about "luv for ya' mama," the p.i. crew concocted a show that managed to convince audiences that the band was for real! With their mesmerizing, humorous, enthusiastic and spontaneously naked stage presence, the p.i. crew even garnered a sizable, dedicated following. The group now known as P.I.C continues to use its trademarked hiphopunkfunkmamboska sound - a robust blend of hip hop, hardcore punk, Latin rhythms, funk and ska - to entertain, offend, charm, and confuse audiences in New York and around the world: their wildly successful debut album hiphopunkfunkmamboska has been added to over 300 radio stations nationwide and has hit #1 on CMJ charts from Canada to Hawaii. And starting in fall 2002, innocent cable viewers, beware! P.I.C is the house band for Comedy Central's Premium Blend! The funniest show ...
