Black & White; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English MADE FOR EACH OTHER: Jimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard star as newlyweds in this delightful romantic dramedy. Stewart plays Johnny Mason, an amiable New York City lawyer who has put his career in jeopardy by refusing the hand of his employer's daughter. His beloved wife, Jane (comically portrayed by Lombard), is despised by Johnny's mother (Lucile Watson), who takes it upon herself to move in with the young couple. Things go from bad to worse when Jane gives birth to a child the family can ill afford. When the infant becomes sick on New Year's Eve, the pressure falls on Johnny to acquire medication from out of state in order to save both his child and his marriage. Impeccably directed by John Cromwell (GODDESS, ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS), MADE FOR EACH OTHER combines laughter with tears in what is a classic, heartwarming example of true family entertainment.
NOTHING SACRED: In this classic screwball comedy, Carole Lombard plays Hazel Flagg, a small-town girl who pretends to be dying from radium poisoning so she can win a free trip to New York City. Fredric March plays Wally Cook, the big-city newspaper reporter who sets up the plan by breaking the story and then complicates matters when he falls for Hazel. The result is a marvelous satire, directed by William Wellman and featuring terrific performances from the two leads as well as Charles Winninger and Walter Connolly. Carole Lombard offers up an ironic monologue about the beauty of dying in what was to be one of her last films prior to her real-life ending in a plane crash. From the breezy pop melody of opening cut "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight" to the near-rap delivery of "I Wanna Talk About Me," it's clear that country traditionalism is not high on Toby Keith's list of priorities for PULL MY CHAIN. While this won't make Keith any friends among the hardcore honky-tonk crowd, ...
