Jerry Jeff Walker's third solo album is a bit of a stylistic mish-mash and a fairly downbeat affair. In fact, with the exception of the lighthearted quasi-ragtime album closer, "Born to Sing a Dancin' Song," the whole thing approaches Leonard Cohen territory. The inherent weightiness can be gleaned from song titles like "Dead Men Got No Dreams."
An unusual song, "Help Me No" excoriates "Those cats upstairs who handle my songs" for "How they string me along" and is uncharacteristically decorated with psychedelic fuzz guitar. The delicate ballad "Seasons Change" is highlighted with a lovely piano-and-dobro arrangement. The standout track, however, is the original demo of Walker's best known song, "Mr. Bojangles." The spare treatment it receives draws out the poignancy of the tune, making it far superior to the more famous official studio version.
Recorded at WBAI, New York, New York and in Davidson County, Tennessee between 1967 and 1969.
Personnel includes: Jerry Jeff Walker (vocals, guitar); Pete Wade (electric guitar, dobro); David Bromberg, Mack Guyden, Wayne Moss (guitar); Weldon Myrick (pedal steel); David Briggs, Paul Harris (piano, organ); Bob Wilson, Hargus Robbins (piano); Charlie McCoy (organ, vibraphone); Norbert Putnam (bass); Kenny Buttrey (drums).

Five Years Gone CD music
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in ...

| | Onaje Allan Gumbs Return To Form: Live At The Blue Note CD (2003)
Five Years Gone music CDs
$13.59 Onaje Allan Gumbs is a highly acclaimed pianist among his fellow jazz musicians, though it is surprising that this veteran has not recorded as a leader more often. This 2000 live set taped at the Blue Note finds him in great form, accompanied by Marcus McLaurine (one of Clark Terry's first-call bassists), drummer Payton Crossley, percussionist Gary Fritz, and on some tracks, saxophonist René McLean. Gumbs' innovative approach to John Coltrane's "Equinox" is marvelous; it's set to a Latin rhythm, substituting the bassline vamp from "A Love Supreme," while also quoting several other works by Coltrane in a tense chart. His shimmering ...
