Sunny and improvisational, Boney James's SHINE--his 10th studio outing--finds the lite urban jazz sax maven in top form. By emphasizing the R&B side of his recipe and inviting friends like Faith Evans and the easy-listening jazz legend George Benson, James scores his most accessible album yet and crosses over to the R&B and Pop Charts in the process. The album includes a cover of Chuck Mangione's "Soft."
Personnel: Boney James (flute, saxophone, keyboards); Dwele, Esthero, Faith Evans, Philip Bailey, Ann Nesby (vocals); George Benson , Paul Jackson, Jr. , Wah Wah Watson (guitar); George Duke (keyboards).

Shine
$7.59 Guitarist Peter White follows up his 2001 release Glow with more solid melodic smooth jazz on Confidential. Once again there is an amiable mix of quiet storm-ready ballads, up-tempo Latin numbers, and groove-oriented soundscapes. Joining White are such instrumental pop luminaries as trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. While there are no particular surprises here, fans of White's incomparable guitar playing should find much to enjoy on this laid-back disc. ~ Matt Collar
Lenny Castro (percussion).
Producers include: Peter White, DC, Paul Brown, Matthew Hager, Brian Culbertson.

| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Shine
$9.29 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, as revealed on the light funk of "Here She Comes" and the snappy "Stone Groove" (featuring Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample). Most impressive of all, the languid closing number, "You Don't Have to Go Home," showcases ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Shine
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful voice on "Love Will Never Let You Down," a seductive ballad about love's ...
| | Euge Groove Just Feels Right CD (2005)
Shine
$12.25 The sophomore release on Narada's jazz imprint for Tower of Power's former saxman Euge Groove, Just Feels Right is an attempt to return to the music of 1976. The groove is the key to the whole, with a mix of funk, smooth jazz, and what almost sounds like quiet storm popping in from time to time. The album was made with a vintage ethic, using almost no gear made after 1976. The session musicians, as well, are from a different age, taking time to perfect the groove and lay out a nice backing rhythm. The compositions aren't particularly adventurous, but that's not really their purpose either. What they are is generally relaxed, simple works. The string arrangements can go a bit over the top at times, in full Love Unlimited Orchestra-style, but for the most part ...
| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
Shine
$8.99 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to ...

$10.95 INFINITY won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. Michael Brecker won a 1996 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for "Impressions."
Few modern pianists have been able to completely transcend McCoy Tyner's breakthroughs in chordal voicings, harmonic cycles and rhythmic/melodic development. Like so many great jazz artists, the road to technical mastery and acclaim inevitably leads to repetition and redundancy, as the innovations of yesterday become the stylistic vestments of today.
Which is why Tyner has always searched for new avenues of exploration and expression. Over the past few years, these mature inquiries have led to some exceptional big band and solo recordings. Now, with ...
