| | Ted Nash In The Loop CD Ted Nash Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Ted Nash: Ted Nash; Frank Kimbrough, Matt Wilson , Ben Allison. Ted Nash returns to modern mainstream jazz on this mostly straight-ahead quintet set, In the Loop. Nash's originals include brooding ballads à la Wayne Shorter, hints of New Orleans parade rhythms, some hard bop and freer playing, none of it sounding particularly derivative. Nash and the enthusiastic Marcus Printup make for a colorful front line, with Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison, and Matt Wilson being a solid and flexible rhythm section. The diverse compositions and consistently strong playing make this a set well-worth exploring. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.75) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The quintet here is pure class: bassist Ben Allison with his composer's restraint and lovely timing...and pianist Frank Kimbrough contributing signature elements, like the raindrop piano splashes on the title cut.." JazzTimes (p.106) - "These nine original pieces have a straightforward approach, to which Nash adds some harmonic concepts that exude a unique combination of warmth and intrigue." | | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
In The Loop
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and general rowdiness of the crowd, it probably found the band marching around the room. In fact, ...
| | Andrew Hill Time Lines CD (2006)
In The Loop
$13.45 Personnel: Andrew Hill (piano); Andrew Hill; John Hebert (upright bass); Greg Tardy (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Charles Tolliver (trumpet); Eric McPherson (drums). Audio Mixer: Dae Bennett. Recording information: Bennett Studios, Englewood, NJ (06/23/2005-07/18/2005). Photographer: Jimmy Katz. While recording for Blue Note in the 1960s, composer and pianist Andrew Hill released some of the most forward-thinking and meticulously constructed albums of the post-bop era. The intelligence and daring that characterized those albums still inhabits Hill's recordings, as 2006's TIME LINES attests. Flanked by a fine quartet (a bassist, drummer, trumpeter, and the multi-talented Greg Tardy on tenor sax, clarinet, and bass clarinet), Hill still reels ...
| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
In The Loop
$13.59 Dave Holland (1~Bass): Dave Holland (double bass); Chris Potter (saxophone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone); Nate Smith (drums); Robin Eubanks. Personnel: Robin Eubanks (trombone); Steve Nelson Quartet (vibraphone, marimba, tambourine); Nate Smith (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (12/2005). Photographer: Ulli Gruber. One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin ...
| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
In The Loop
$9.69 Dave Holland (1~Bass): Dave Holland (upright bass); Antonio Hart (alto saxophone); Alex Sipagin (trumpet); Robin Eubanks (trombone); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Eric Harland (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (08/2007). Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences and sees Antonio Hart switching to soprano. On the soulful side, the ...

| | Arc Name The Day CD (2004)
In The Loop
$11.39 The New Album from the Capital Regions Most Promising Rock Band!!! (Albany Times Union)Arc is a band that writes songs in wide-screen, and their new album is no exception. Filled with songs that run heated and dense, to those that are vast and expansive, there is a big retro-vibe that sits at the core of this new album. If the child of Jimmy Page and Lady Stardust were to start a band and fill it with members steeped in 70's rock and early Punk, this would be the sound. Accomplished and full, "Name the Day" runs the gamut of rock. From blazing guitars and thunderous drums, to singer songwriter ballads and slow simmering instrumentals, this album takes the listener on a journey from beginning to end. To get the feel of "Name the Day" I recommend checking out the lusty beginning track "mistreating" with its intensely sexy blues-rock guitar solos. Follow that up with the albums definitive radio hit "Sink or Swim." But don't get fooled, these boys have a lot to give, check out the powerful (drum heavy) "Subtle ...
