The second studio album to feature the revamped Gov't Mule lineup, 2006's HIGH & MIGHTY finds the adventurous Southern rock quartet breaking into a confident new stride. As always, vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes's soulful singing and blistering slide work lead the way, as the rest of the band intuitively fill out his compositions with impressive rhythmic and melodic flourishes. Although the fierce opening track, "Mr. High & Mighty," may have listeners thinking Gov't Mule has morphed into a straight-up hard-rock act, other songs delve into reggae ("Unring the Bell") and gospel-tinged blues ("Million Miles from Yesterday"), revealing that the ensemble remains as eclectic as ever.

impeccable. i have to agree with jbird that this one is way better than deja voodoo which i found a major disappointment after liking EVERYTHING the band has done in the past. from start to finish good songs abound.

 oops . . . .running short on ideas
Great musicians but lousy, boring songwriting do not make for a great CD. Not to be a party-pooper or anything but as much as I love Haynes and company, this one is a complete snoozer. Boring!

This one is their best one yet;I am so into the first 5 cuts,I find it hard to not go back and play them again and again and again....streamline woman,brand new angel,so weak so strong,and 3 finger george are the highlights-this one needs to be played REAL loud;it is way better than deja voo-doo,which I thought was kind of weak.This one is a must buy.

Unfortunately it seems Warren begins to run out of good ideas...After 5 very good albums and many collaborations,the time has come...If you're a fan you already have it, but if you're a newcomer ,choose one of the first 3 (or all of them).
Hope we see them live sometime down here!

In 1997, following a short period of splitting time between the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes left the former to concentrate full-time on the latter. With Haynes' rededication to the band, Mule went on to resurrect and expand upon the power-trio concept first pioneered by Cream and Mountain. Much like its predecessors, the Mule's fifth album, LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, continues to be yoked to leader Haynes' gruff vocals and formidable guitar playing.
