Best known for his brilliant production of numerous country, folk, and rock acts of the 1960s, Jack Nitzsche was a talented orchestrator who brought a bit of high-mindedness to the pop albums he produced. On this '66 release (reissued on CD 40 years later), the opposite dynamic happens, as he brings a sparkling sense of drama and youthful energy (perhaps a product of his years in Phil Spector's famed Wrecking Crew) to some of Chopin's most affecting works. "Funeral Procession" is given a stirring and cinematic treatment, "Fantasie Prelude" floats on a romantic swell of strings and stardust, and the jaunty "Etude in E Major" seems to be waiting for a Dusty Springfield vocal. | | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Chopin '66 CD music
$16.02 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's ...
| | Holy Rollers Fabuley/As Is CD (1991)
Chopin '66 music CDs
$11.79 Just as conscious of aiming for the heights as before -- the opening "Changeling" adds wordless backing vocals to increase the scope of the aggressive number, and succeeds in a haunting fashion -- the Holy Rollers here keep things going with Fabuley. The last major release by the original lineup, Fabuley plays with the epic in fine fashion, sounding ...

| | Tiger Army Early Years EP CD (2002) Extended Play
Chopin '66 music CDs
$6.29 THE EARLY YEARS features 6 unreleased and out-of-print tracks from Tiger Army's first recording sessions from 1996 and 1997.
Principally recorded at Grizzly Studios, Petaluma, California between 1996 & 1997.
Culled from Tiger Army's back catalog of unreleased songs and early demo outtakes (predating the band's affiliation with Hellcat Records), The Early Years is a reissue aimed at satisfying fans of the band seeking to complete their collections, rather than aimed at attracting new fans to the fold. The songs contained on Early Years are all serviceable rockabilly/punkabilly numbers, but they lack any real power or direction and are pretty forgettable as a result. Tiger Army's anthemic "Jungle Cat" is full of lines like, "Don't step on my tiger tail/I'll rip your guts out" and rallying cries of "let's prowl," and, not surprisingly, it comes across as being more than a little cheesy. The band often bears more than just a passing resemblance to the Stray Cats (musically), but the difference between the two groups is that the Stray Cats were the whole package. Sure, the Cats had their own silly kitty anthem ("Stray Cat Strut"), but Brian Setzer and the boys had the attitude and the chops to back it up. "American Nightmare" finds the band giving that Misfits track the rockabilly treatment, ...
| | Deep Purple Bananas CD (2003)
Chopin '66 songs
$7.79 Bananas has every sign of being a disappointment. Jon Lord's grandiose keyboards were always a focus but he's gone, it's released in the heady age of Radiohead, and it's got one of the oddest titles and the oddest cover art that ever graced a Deep Purple album. Surprise, it's fantastic. New keyboardist Don Airey is an effective replacement, adding new sounds and styles and working the Hammond so well that an uncredited Lord appearance was rumored among fans. Lord has said he's not playing on the album, but he did contribute ...
