It's arguable that at no point since his 1960s heyday has Bob Dylan been as celebrated as in the decade following his critically acclaimed 1997 album TIME OUT OF MIND. Numerous films, books, and albums--mostly Columbia's impressive archive series of reissues--have been part of a universal canonization of the singer and met with considerable enthusiasm by fans and critics alike. 2006's MODERN TIMES, the third album to have been released in nearly 10 years and part of a trilogy that also includes 2001's brilliant and upbeat LOVE AND THEFT, is easily deserving of such enthusiasm and is further reason for the formal veneration.
Musically, the album finds Dylan once again mining the stately traditionalist sound first heard on LOVE AND THEFT. Lazy blues numbers, piano-based songbook pop, and jumpin' country swing provide the backdrop for Dylan's continuing study of the vicissitudes of life, love, and death. Although he is certainly world-weary, a lot of life is lived in the verses of these songs and there is a dogged spirituality that provides, if not hope (a rather prosaic notion for Dylan by this point, to be sure), at least a means to finding contentment. Finally, a word about Dylan's voice here: while his singing has always been unconventional and never pretty in any traditional sense, in its raspy magnificence it is simply perfect for this timeless music.

Rolling Stone (pp.99-100) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "The mood is America on the brink -- of mechanization, of war, of domestic tranquility, of fulfilling its promise and of selling its dreams one by one for cash on the barrelhead....It is music of accumulated knowledge..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] great deal of it is split between 12-bar treatises about love and lust and croonsome ballads about much the same themes, and one regularly gets the sense that its author might just be having a whale of a time." Bob Dylan Modern Times Songs Modern Times Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Dylan is back!
I own 4 Dylan albums: Highway 69 Revisited, Blood on the Tracks, Time Out of Mind, and Modern Times. Time Out of Mind shocked me when it came out, and I immediately loved it. I thought Dylan re-invented his sound and style on that record, but the material was overall dark and not terribly energetic, sort of the "dawn of my life blues". On Modern Times, Dylan continues along the similar sounds and styles heard in Time Out of Mind, but here, Dylan is back with a vengeance. The spirit of Modern Times is totally different - Dylan sounds totally re-energized, confident, and rockin'! Yes, his voice is aged and sounds kind of raspy, hoarse, and gritty, but it fits the music on this album perfectly. Dylan's lyrics are spitting fire as always, full of satire, sarcasm, and life experiences. The supporting band is excellent as well - I believe he's playing with his touring band here. The songs are a mix of rock-blues (with two excellent re-makes of Muddy Waters originals) and the slower ballads. Music is excellent, original, well-engineered, and well-produced. You can't go wrong buying this album. Submitted by DS (NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another masterpiece from Bob Dylan This album is really among the best of Dylan's career. The music and lyrics are just as brilliant as anything he's ever done. True, his voice isn't what it used to be, but he's 65 years old on Modern Times. Somehow, this album is magical, anyway. Nettie Moore is my favorite off this one. I have read some reviews claiming that Modern Times is part of some Dylan trilogy. I disagree. His last masterpieces have been Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind, Love And Theft, and Modern Times. If you go back and listen to Oh Mercy, you should find that Time Out Of Mind sounds, in mood and theme, very much the same. I see those as a vol.1 and vol. 2. Same goes for Love And Theft and Modern Times. These two also sound like a double package. The comeback everyone is talking about for Bob, really started with Oh Mercy, and contines today with Modern Times. Submitted by Mark (Milwaukee, WI.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Masterpiece! Although Bob Dylan's voice has become more raspy as he's gotten older, his voice blends in just right with the music on this absolutely stunning album. Every track on "Modern Times" is a lot more than just memorable, sounding very similar to Dylan's early work, as well as the old-time music he was inspired by and grew up with. Even Dylan has mentioned how he's had one of the best times of his life making this record. I'm proud of Bob Dylan for making such a magical album and for having such an amazing and positive outlook on his life and career, and that's incredible for the man at the age of 65 whom is known as the greatest songwriter of all time! Modern Times album
$6.89 TIME OUT OF MIND won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Cold Irons Bound" won the 1998 Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
This album by the quintessential singer-songwriter comes after a long layoff from recording original material. Dylan's previous two albums were powerful collections of traditional songs, and the album that preceded them was full of some rather iffy original tunes, so all eyes were on Dylan to make one of his patented surprise comebacks. As luck would have it, that's exactly what TIME OUT OF MIND turns out to be. Produced by Daniel Lanois, who manned the boards for Dylan's best latter-day album, OH MERCY, this one has the kind of raw, spontaneous vibe that serves Zimmy's music so well.

| | Bob Dylan Love And Theft CD (2001)
Modern Times CD music
$8.99 Bob Dylan's career has always been about defying expectations. Accordingly he followed 1997's much-heralded TIME OUT OF MIND with a marked about-face. Where its predecessor was a bleak emotional landscape full of languid atmospheres, existential sentiments, and graveyard vocal delivery, LOVE AND THEFT finds Dylan much more energized and hopeful. Instead of swamp-like textures, we get sharp, cracking bar-band blues, and lissome ballads with a '20s/'30s feel. The old codger has never sounded more spry; after observing that "summer days and summer nights are gone," he follows up with "I know a place where there's still something going on." Elsewhere he's variously hunting bear, standing on a table to make a toast, burning down a house, and starting a new empire.
The musical context for all this uproar ...
| | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003)
Modern Times music CDs
$11.99 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic anti-hero of "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Modern Times songs
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply ...

Modern Times CD music
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her ...

No, not "The" Toadies. Just Toadies, thank you, and leave your eardrums at the door.
