The Rudy Van Gelder-helmed reissue of 1957's THE CONGREGATION improves on what is already a classic Johnny Griffin date. Backed by Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Dennis on drums, and Sonny Clark on piano, Griffin demonstrates his usual dazzling dexterity on the tenor sax. The mode is straightforward bop, with a balance of uptempo numbers and ballads, and plenty of stretching out all around. This set comes highly recommended--especially given the improved sound of the reissue--to fans of the style.
The great tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is heard in top form on this near-classic quartet set. Assisted by pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Kenny Dennis, Griffin is exuberant on "The Congregation" (which is reminiscent of Horace Silver's "The Preacher"), thoughtful on the ballads, and swinging throughout. It's recommended for bop collectors. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Hank Mobley Another Workout: RVG Series CD (1961)
Congregation CD music
$8.99 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow
Reviewers called tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley underrated so many times that the word may as well have been his middle name, and when combined with the numerous financial, personal, and health issues that Mobley endured during his career, it all added up to a middle of the pack position in the jazz canon. He truly deserves a reevaluation. This delightfully warm set was cut on December 5, 1961 with Mobley on tenor sax, Wynton ...
| | Donald Byrd Royal Flush: RVG Series CD (1961)
Congregation music CDs
$9.39 In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading trumpeters on the American jazz scene. Recorded in autumn 1961, ROYAL FLUSH is hard-swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?) and deep-grooving hard bop. It does, however, point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading straight-ahead trumpeters on the American jazz scene. ROYAL FLUSH, recorded in autumn 1961, is bold, swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?), and deep-grooving hard bop. Yet, it does at times point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
Donald Byrd was at his peak as a straight-ahead hard bop band leader in the early '60s, turning in a series of remarkably solid, enjoyable sessions for Blue Note. Royal Flush is no exception to the rule. Recorded in the fall of 1961, Royal Flush finds Byrd once ...
| | Freddie Hubbard Here To Stay CD (1988) Remastered
Congregation songs
$8.99 This two-LP set, which was released in 1979 as part of United Artists' Blue Note reissue series, brought back trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's early album Hub Cap, a sextet session with tenor-saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, and pianist Cedar Walton. Although that session (comprised of four Hubbard compositions, one of Walton's songs, and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not") is excellent, it is the full album of previously unreleased material from an all-star quintet that is of greatest interest. Hubbard teams up with fellow Jazz Messengers Wayne Shorter (on tenor), Walton, bassist Reggie Workman, and (in Blakey's spot) drummer Philly Joe Jones for some advanced hard bop. Highpoints include the fiery "Philly Mignon" and a strong version of "Body and Soul." ~ Scott Yanow
Blue Note had an all too frequent habit of sitting on sessions for years before releasing them, as was the case with this fine quintet outing from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, which was originally recorded in 1962 but didn't see the light of day until 1976 when it was paired with Hubbard's Hub Cap session as a double LP, and then didn't see a stand-alone release until the mid-'80s. Teaming with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Philly Joe ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Happenings CD (1966) Remastered
Congregation album
$8.49 HAPPENINGS was vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's fourth Blue Note release as a leader. Where its predecessors DIALOGUE and COMPONENTS were packed with challenging avant-bop, HAPPENINGS instead brings things down a notch. With pianist Herbie Hancock, drummer Joe Chambers, and bassist Bob Cranshaw on board, Hutcherson keeps the tone fairly light, performing his original compositions (the exception is Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") with a mellow, swinging style that emphasizes modal exploration. The performances are all top-notch, and the album still weighs in as one of the best in Hutcherson's fine catalogue.
Bobby Hutcherson's first quartet outing, Happenings, casts the brightest spotlight on the vibraphonist's soloing abilities, matching him once again with pianist Herbie Hancock (who is also heavily featured) and drummer Joe Chambers, plus bassist Bob Cranshaw. For that matter, the album also leans heavily on Hutcherson's compositional skills; save for Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," six of the seven numbers are Hutcherson originals. Given his reputation as a modernist, most of the pieces ...
| | Lee Morgan City Lights CD (1957) Remastered
Congregation CD music
$8.99 Lee Morgan was only a tender 19 years of age when he led this 1957 Blue Note date, but his technique surpassed most of the more seasoned trumpeters on the scene. Technically agile and possessed of a bright, clear tone (he clearly belongs to the lineage of Dizzy Gillespie), Morgan shines on CITY LIGHTS, and his sidemen--including saxophonist George Coleman, trombonist Curtis Fuller, and bassist Paul Chambers--are ...

Congregation songs
$15.05 On AT THE DEER HEAD INN, pianist Keith Jarrett returns to the very club in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania that supported him during his formative years as a music student. Jarrett plays seven standards on this disc, and each tune highlights his inimitable stream-of-consciousness approach to improvisation. Although Jarrett's longtime cohort, drummer Jack DeJohnette, ...
