In A Flesh Aquarium songs
$11.35 Although Hypocrisy's career has continually had to contend with leader Peter Tägtgren's parallel success as one of Scandinavia's busiest producers, his workaholic ways have generally guaranteed regular touring opportunities, and albums both solid in content and frequent of release. Sure enough, 2005's Virus is Hypocrisy's tenth full studio effort in just over a decade (with several EPs and live/greatest-hits sets snuck in between), and longtime followers will likely be relieved to discover that it doesn't explore tangential metal styles of temporary popularity, as did occasional previous efforts such as 2002's nu-metal-leaning Catch 22. Instead, new songs like "Warpath," "Scrutinized," and "Compulsive Psychosis" generally apply the melodic sensibility and arranging simplicity of the '90s Gothenburg scene to the harsher, thrashier rhythmic attack common to the more extreme sounds that preceded (and followed) it, forging an amalgam of death metal-based subgenres representative of Tägtgren's wide versatility both in front of and behind the studio's plate-glass window. Of course, by the same token, one could also accuse it of being vague in its direction, but as long as the majority of these songs stand up to scrutiny when it comes to compelling and memorable ...
| | Cynic Focus CD (1993) Remastered
In A Flesh Aquarium album
$15.65 Chuck Schuldiner's Death got pretty clinical with the odd time signature, and Atheist got pretty busy with their complex arrangements, but Florida's Cynic simply threw the progressive metal playbook out the window. Their only official recording, 1993's ground breaking Focus, meshed metal and jazz on an unprecedented scale, and explored the creative possibilities of this strange musical hybrid to a degree which has yet to be equaled. For Cynic, the traditional framework of death metal songwriting served as a mere foundation over which the band would take flight, yielding moments of mind-blowing diversity and inspiration (and, occasionally, dumbfounded confusion) on multi-faceted tracks like "Veil of the Maya," "I'm But a Wave To...," and "Textures." Never mind the contrast of time traveling proportions created by their dual vocalists, clashing stone age-style death grunts with robotic computer-processed melodies (the later, a clear influence on digi-metallers Fear Factory). And yet, as suggested by its title, their stunning sonic collages were uncommonly focused and concise, avoiding the time transgressions of most progressive metal to achieve even greater impact. Simply put, Focus remains a wholly original and widely respected release ...

| | Jules Shear Got No Breeding CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
In A Flesh Aquarium CD music
$10.49 Jules and the Polar Bears' debut album, Got No Breeding, fell into a commercial twilight zone shortly after its release in 1978; the music was too quirky and the wit of the lyrics was too curious for the mainstream rock audience, but the band's approach was too firmly rooted in mainstream pop for the new wave crowd, who Columbia thought would be the record's likely target audience (and the shaggy picture of Jules Shear and his bandmates on the cover wasn't likely to encourage the skinny-tie wearing record buyer). However, in time Got No Breeding became a cult favorite, and with good reason -- it's a superlative collection of smart, well-crafted pop tunes played with enthusiasm and élan by a great band. The studio-savvy guitar work of Richard Bredice and Stephen Hague's piano have one foot in mainstream rock & roll, but the slightly strangled cry of Shear's vocals takes these songs into another place, though he's able to keep up with the band when they shift into high gear on tunes like "Convict" and "Driftwood from Disaster," ...
