Most supergroups don't last long, and GTR was no exception to the rule. Steve Hackett and Steve Howe -- lead guitarists for the prime periods of Genesis and Yes, respectively -- formed the band in 1986, not with the intention of reviving classic prog rock, but with the idea of making a stadium-shaking hard rock band. It was two veterans with very clear musical identities of their own, teamed with a trio of supporting musicians eager for a big break. Not the ideal formula for a perfect rock album, since the scales were already tipped toward one side as the recording began. And, GTR's lone eponymous album didn't deliver the fireworks that Howe and Hackett fans desired. Part of the problem is that the two guitarists crowd each other out; it rarely sounds like they're trading licks, but rather like they're stepping forward for solos at their pre-scheduled times. Despite the largely cool reaction of Hackett and Howe's dedicated fan base, GTR wound up being a respectable hit in America, thanks to the terrific leadoff track, "When the Heart Rules the Mind." The one track where the group's go-for-broke arena rock formula paid off huge dividends, this is anthemic, professional stadium rock at its best, with a great hook on the chorus, a fine performance by Max Bacon, and some nice, tightly controlled soloing. There are other moments that work pretty well on the record but, on the whole, the record feels a bit like a missed opportunity. There are glimmers of what might have been -- what GTR could have done if they dropped their crossover ambitions -- but as it stands, GTR marks the point in time when both Howe and Hackett took one last stab at commercially oriented rock, before turning toward more ambitious solo projects. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

GTR Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Not 24bit remastered I bought this cd expecting to hear a remastered version of this old 80's classic, but unlike most japan mini lps, this one doesn't seem to be remastered at all. If it is remastered, then I would have to say they did a very poor job. Sounds exactly the same as my original GTR cd. Also, this cd doesn't include the mini poster that I have seen included with other GTR japan mini lps. All in all, a very disappointing purchase. GTR stands for guitar! A "supergroup" is always a very risky label for a new band to have, sort of like being labeled a "New Elvis" or a "New Dylan". GTR unfortunately falls into that category as they could not last long enough to record a sophomore effort. However, I really do like this album, as anything featuring guitarists Steve Howe and Steve Hackett needs to be checked out. The fledgling band avoids the "progressive" tag identified with Howe and Hackett's past bands as all tracks are under six minutes. A great example of late 80s pomp-laced power rock, "GTR" definitely rates a good listen and is an essential purchase as it provides a tantalizing glimpse of what might have been had personality differences not gotten in the way. $33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand the novelty tag. OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE was the Small Faces' swan-song, at least until an ill-starred reunion, but it proved a fitting end to a golden era.

| | Manfred Mann Solar Fire CD (1973)
GTR songs
$37.25 Fans of muscular progressive rock will love Solar Fire, a concept album loosely designed around cosmology. The album opens with the majestic "Father of Night, Father of Day," which has the drive and complexity of a prime King Crimson track. As unlikely as it may seem, the track was controversial in Mann's native South Africa because of the "Father of black, father of white" line, implying that apartheid might not extend to infinite space. The album moves on to the progressive rock/jazz fusion of "In the Beginning, Darkness," a swinging, even funky track that benefits from soulful vocals by Doreen Chanter and Irene Chanter of the Grove Singers. The same duo contributes to the title track, a slow piece that begins with a fairly standard rock structure and incorporates a massive progressive jam in the middle. The instrumental suite which follows is a showcase for the combination of angular, sometimes slightly dissonant guitar ...

$18.55 Les Ekorches was created by four legends of the metal scene in Montreal. Mark Vaillankourt(BARF) on vocals, Michel "away" Langevin (voivod) on drums, Philippe Mius d'entrmont on cello and Pat Gordon (ghoulunatics) on accoustic guitar. | | Jehan Shooting Ships & Sinking Stars CD (2009)
GTR music CDs
$10.15 It’s been several years of struggle but Jehan has finally completed his debut EP, “Shooting Ships and Sinking Stars”. Despite playing around Sydney in a variety of lineups it took many years to reform his sound from a few interesting pieces of guitar work to finally be able to express that voice in the back of his head. After a year in Latin America, he returned with a strong resolve to make his contribution to the world of music and began to play open mic nights, busk and the occasional house party. The influence of Sigur Ros, Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez, Radiohead, Josh Pyke, Damien Rice and other favourite artists began to become more apparent, although the sound still had that originality that a self-taught guitarist tends to have. If you do something different every day it becomes a bit better as each day passes and eventually you find yourself with something people aren’t completely familiar with. He spent three months in Thailand travelling about with a guitar. The live music scene received him well and offered him many opportunities, especially in the North where he was able to play an early set at the Pai Reggae Festival. Upon his return he graduated in Arts at Sydney Uni and felt he had paid his lip service to the notion of a conventional life. It was time to spend his days playing music wherever there was a willing ear. Starting at the bottom, the going was slow. In 2008 he played over a hundred gigs, once even playing three times in a single day: and one of those gigs was in Newcastle. It was exhausting day for what was often a thankless task. But it felt right. He later began to play with drummer Jeremy Nash and bassis Jacob Stretton in the “Ragged Few”. This lineup was to last five months and see opportunities start to present themselves. Although there were personal differences, the band remained together long enough to play at venues such as the Annandale, BarMe and Wesley Mission Auditorium. Jehan still played solo sets with a residency at the Roxbury in Glebe and playing a support gig for Mushu at the Supper Club. Towards the end of the year things had noticeable begun to pick up. The year of exhaustive gigging had brought him in touch with a slowing growing group of people that had begun to support his music. When offered a gig at the Basement supporting Saving Grace and the Winter People, he decided it was time to find the lineup the music was calling out for. Playing with Emma Trevena (Cello), Emily Margo (percussion) and arming himself with a stomp box, he suddenly found what he’d be searching for all these years. During this time, he was put in touch ...
