| Phineas Never Left
Phineas Newborn Jr. Memphis born prodigy and piano virtuoso experienced little success and virtually zero recognition until moving to L.A. in 1960 where he proceeded to record for Lester Koenig at Contemporary between 1961 and 1976. It was not exactly a comeback when he sat down to record this in 1978 for Pablo. The album absolutely sparkles with the blues, bop and honey dripping licks that fans (though not necessarily critics) loved so well from his best at Contemporary. I could not imagine that this album would be up to the standards I had come to expect from a Newborn Trio LP. I have been more than pleasantly surprised. Newborn, playing with Ray Brown on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums, is in top form. The song list and production suggest that Phineas was free to choose and play what he liked, and what he enjoyed is, and always was irresistable to this listener. Most bios will tell you Phineas had faded from view by the year he made this. What few seem to realize is that Newborn was a major influence on players from Bobby Timmons to Harold Mabern Jr., to Mulgrew Miller, James Williams (and others). Moreso, Newborn's work has spawned a veritable 'Back to Phineas' movement which is most evident in the works of Americans recorded in Japan. Here's the playlist for those, like myself, who want to know what is on an album before buying it: Salt Peanuts, The Man I Love, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Amber's song, Tamarind Blues, Night in Tunisia, Sometimes I'm Happy and Donald's Dream. I've said enough. Go buy it.
