| | Howling Hex Nightclub Version Of The Eternal CD Howling Hex Discography of CDs
Neil Hagerty's impulse to undercut traditional notions of musicality was easier to reconcile as inspired primitivism in Pussy Galore and early Royal Trux when he could barely play. A couple of decades of riffing have resulted in some impressively well-honed guitar chops, though, so Hagerty has to opt for other methods of creative self-sabotage on NIGHTCLUB VISION OF THE ETERNAL, the Howling Hex's third full-length on Drag City. All the songs clock in at interminable lengths, and Hagerty seems to be purposefully playing below his talent. Still, bad Hagerty is always unique rock and better than most. Lyn Madison's soulful vocals are also a highlight.

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Nightclub Version Of The Eternal CD music
$17.10 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, ...

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Nightclub Version Of The Eternal CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange ...

| | Beaver & Krause Gandharva CD (1971)
Nightclub Version Of The Eternal CD music
$10.29 In electronic music circles -- and among "heads" in general -- the names of Beaver & Krause have attained an almost mystical status that their small back catalog frankly struggles to live up to. Sure, they were matchmakers when commercial rock and electronic music were circling each other warily -- it was Bernie Krause, in particular, who introduced the Moog synthesizer to the likes of George Harrison and Micky Dolenz (though he neglected to show them how to put it to good use). Yet much of their recorded work sounds remarkably timid when compared to that of other electronic pioneers of the period. Ironically, the most powerful music they committed to record involved hardly any electronic input whatsoever. The suite that filled the second side of Gandharva was recorded in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral -- chosen for its extended decay time and as a space that would make the most of new quadrophonic recording techniques -- and involved jazz legend Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax and ...
