Estrella Morente (Estrella de la Aurora Morente Carbonell) was born on August 14, 1980 in Las Gabias, Granada. She is a Spanish flamenco singer and daughter of flamenco singer Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell. She has been performing with her father since age 7 and recorded her first album in 2001, Mi Cante Y Un Poema (My Songs and A Poem). This was quickly followed by Calle del Aire in the same year, which was well received by critics and flamenco fans alike. On December 14, 2001 she married bullfighter Javier Conde in Nuestra Se¤ora de las Angustias basilica in Granada. She released her third album, Mujeres (Women) in 2006. Her father was the producer. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers such as Licea, Raul Planas, and Ibrahum Ferrer. As would be expected, the trumpets blare with traditional Cuban bravado, evoking gentle romance and fiery passion with equal ease. Even the resident gringo, Ry Cooder, gets in some choice licks on "Alto Songo." The relative lack of dynamic movement in most of these songs may lead to them blending together in the ear of the listener, but the inherent tunefulness of each track, not to mention the sheer drive that this band is capable of summoning, cancels that complaint out nicely. Whelan incorporates a variety of ethnic musical traditions as well as modern and choral music and the hypnotic, rhythmic hard-shoe Irish dancing for which RIVERDANCE is famous. Part of a Storyville CD series that has released rare performances taken from the Dr. Jazz radio shows of 1952, these 17 selections by Eddie Condon's band are most valuable for featuring the talented but largely forgotten trumpeter Johnny Windhurst. The Dixieland standards also have spots for the highly expressive clarinetist Edmond Hall, trombonist Cutty Cutshall, pianist Gene Scroeder, either Bob Casey or Bill Goodall on bass and Buzzy Drootin, Cliff Leeman or Mort Herbert on drums but it is Windhurst's solos that generally take honors.
