Hailed by critics as landmark cinema, SATANTANGO transcends all genres, surpasses all styles. The story revolves around an abandoned agricultural collective, where a handful of lost and lonely characters eke out a living until a charismatic con man arrives to shake things up. However, the richness of the film comes from the director's singular vision. A master of melancholy, and a virtuoso of the long take and immaculate composition, he has been rightly called "one of the most innovative and accomplished auteurs in filmmaking today"(MoMA). The DVD premiere of SATANTANGO is a new digital transfer supervised by Bela Tarr himself. This ambitious, black-and-white, seven-hour Hungarian film from idiosyncratic auteur Bela Tarr follows the inhabitants of a run-down Hungarian village still reeling from the collapse of Communism. Based on Laszlo Karsznahorkai's novel and filmed over a period of two years, the critically acclaimed epic takes the time to explore each character's unique point of view. Satantango Reviews: 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his story of revenge and social collapse bends time, space and the viewer's consciousness like few others."-- Jonathan Romney, Uncut "[A] kind of holy grail for cinephiles....What makes it an astonishing work is its immanent sense of the great Hungarian plain and the absurd drudgery of rural life-- Nick James, Sight and Sound "[The film] garnered lavish praise from Susan Sontag and inspired Gus Van Sant's return to low-budget experimental fare..."-- Film Comment Staff, Film Comment

Satantango DVD Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr's 7-hour, black-and-white epic based on the novel by Laszlo Karsznahorkai took two years to film. The complex story follows a group of people living in a dilapidated village in post-communist Hungary. Tarr examines their standstill lives through a series of episodes told from each person's point-of-view. Susan Sontag said, "Devastating, enthralling for every minute of its seven hours. I'd be glad to see it every year for the rest of my life." Winner of the Caligari Film Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize Special Mention at the 1994 Berlin International Film Festival.

Satantango DVD
$13.55 This new and embellished version of the 2001 theatrical release, which was a cult hit, offers twenty minutes of scenes that were deleted from the original, sound improvements, new songs (such as "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS), and new special effects that give insight into Donnie's world and his theories of time travel.
Writer-director Richard Kelly's bold debut film is a social satire, a dark comedy, a science fiction time-traveling fantasy, and a suburban nightmare about an extremely intelligent, depressive, self-destructive, narcoleptic, gun-toting, sex-crazed, teenaged arsonist: Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal). DONNIE DARKO is not your typical teen comedy. But, like GHOST WORLD and RUSHMORE, it uses the trappings of the teen comedy as the entry point for a subversive and trenchant (and also wonderfully entertaining) look at American life. The difference between those films and DONNIE DARKO is that Donnie is an unlikely hero who just might save the world.
It's October 1988, in the ...

$23.35 Produced by Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen--both of 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP fame--SUPERBAD is the story of two horny teenage geeks looking to lose their virginity before college. Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are hoping to end high school on a high note, and when one of their crushes (Emma Hill) invites them to a graduation party, the boys are ecstatic. That is, until they become responsible for supplying the party with alcohol. They hurriedly concoct a scheme to use their friend Fogell's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) horrendously fake ID, but trouble soon arises when Fogell becomes the victim of a liquor store robbery. The cops (Rogen and Bill Hader) show up, and the evening quickly disintegrates into a hilarious mess of misunderstandings, crackhead sing-alongs, and beer mixed with laundry detergent.
Hill is a riot as the wild-haired and foul-mouthed Seth, and Mintz-Plasse is great fun as the uber-geek Fogell. But Michael Cera (formerly of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) steals the show as the sensitive and levelheaded Evan. His oddball line delivery and excellent comic ...
