The British duo Zero dB have been remixing songs for other artists since the beginning of the 21st century, but it's not been until 2006 that they've put out their own full-length album. Coming in the form of the nine-song Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines, the record shows off Zero dB in their element, blending layers of rhythms and jazzy keys into something that ends up being very listenable and accessible while still retaining a hard, beat-heavy edge. Drums and bass are the most important aspect of their sound, and they stand out from those around them with their ability to put seemingly disparate beats together into something that works really well. The album moves through samba, jazz, hip-hop, and conga with direction and intensity, so much so that even the slower, more introspective tracks ("Anything's Possible," "Sunshine Lazy") never lose their sense of purpose and turn into dribbling jazz-house numbers about flying and freedom (even "Sunshine Lazy," which lyrically veers toward that, stays very fresh thanks to the inclusion of a live double bass, guitar, and trumpet). Zero dB are definitely best when experimenting with jazz, sounding most comfortable while maneuvering around swing and even a bit of bop (check out the trumpet on "On the 1 & 3"), though "A Pomba Girou" -- also the album's first single -- takes a great samba beat and adds a crispy synth bass and warm vocals from Heidi Vogel and ends up being an excellent track. Their attempts at conga ("Conga Madness") and the other samba-based song ("Coisa de Gringo") are unfortunately less successful, a little too regimented and strict for what the genre entails, but the grimy "Know What I'm Sayin'," featuring rapper Pase Rock, is good, and shows how versatile the duo is, able to complement the MC's rhymes and still keep things dirty and thick. It's all about rhythm here, anyway, at which Zero dB excel, so while Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines may falter occasionally, it's not for lack of intensity or talent; rather, it's from an overly ambitious desire to incorporate their many influences into one thing, which is hardly something to be ashamed of, and certainly doesn't make for a bad album. It just means that the best is yet to come. ~ Marisa BrownMojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[They] play fast and loose with samples and electronics to create an adrenalised party vibe. | | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines CD music
$9.99 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades ...

It's always a sign that a group is hot if they release a holiday album mere months after their debut. That's the case with *NSYNC. Their debut was released in America in late March, and in early December, Home for Christmas hit the shelves. Much of the album is devoted to newer material, with only ...
| | Chris Brown Graffiti CD (2009)
Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines songs
$11.18 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman
Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the silly things that come out ...

| | Maxwell Blacksummers' Night CD (2009)
Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines CD music
$8.49 It's been eight long years between Maxwell's third and fourth studio albums. BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is the first release of a trilogy, with BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(rooted in gospel, with a twist, apparently) and BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(promised as a disc of slow jams) to follow. Just as Maxwell arrived in 1996, offering an alternative to the exaggerated masculinity that was dominating contemporary R&B, he returns when the airwaves are still stuffed with raging hormones. He has made no concessions to them however--the highly romantic BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is all devotion, regret, and heartache. Maxwell's backing ...

| | Reptet Do This! CD (2006)
Bongos, Bleeps & Basslines songs
$11.49 Reptet plays jazz music informed by a post modern sensibility. They deal in dichotomy. Rooted in the spirit and language of jazz they reject its often times rigid traditionalism and codified expectations. They are a sextet consisting of six multi-instrumentalists that play original compositions written by band members. The audible palate from which they draw is broad and colorful. They have established themselves as a group of considerable excitement, talent and vision while simultaneously debunking preconceived notions of what a “jazz group†ought to be. Their music has been aired on radio stations across the North America and Europe and their members have toured internationally. With the release of their second CD “Do This!†on Monkatil Records, they have established themselves as an irrepressible force in modern jazz.Tobi Stone has studied with such jazz greats as Don Lanphere, Michael ...
