While a sideman with the inimitable Terence Blanchard, pianist/composer Edward Simon released a series of recorded ensemble works, including La Bikina and Afinidad, which impressed upon his listeners his sense of swing, melodic structure, and harmonic balance. Later, with drummer Eric Harland and bassist John Patitucci, Simon released The Process, followed by Simplicity in 2004 with bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Adam Cruz. These trio recordings were critically acclaimed and led Simon to continue his legacy as a bandleader in the classic trio format. With his third recorded trio work, Unicity, Simon now offers his audience an impeccable selection of ten songs accompanied by drummer Brian Blade and bassist Patitucci. As his best recording to date, Unicity brilliantly captures Simon's gold-standard abilities with Afro-Hispanic rhythms, instruments, and classical and jazz forms. The haunting theme "Abiding Unicity," which he has dedicated to Egberto Gismonti, surrenders Gismonti's remarkable influence on the pianist with elaborate, romantic beauty. Simon's delicate classicism is brilliantly underlined by the subdued basslines of Patitucci and creative percussive expressions of Blade. This song is absolutely beautiful. "Prelude No. 9" -- a stunning composition written by Federico Mompou -- has been given a new 4/4 time signature and a solo section based on the composition where the award-winning Simon truly shines. Patitucci takes the lead on "Pathless Path," with a memorable electric bass intro that eventually evolves into a priceless solo by Simon. The interplay of this trio is beyond expectations. The remaining songs are just as extraordinary. Simply put, the entire recording is amazing. Each song is performed to perfection and it's no wonder that this particular trio is being compared to the powerful expressions of such spectacular jazz trios as Peterson, Brown, and Thigpen; Jamal, Crosby, and Fournier; and Evans, LaFaro, and Motian. A must-have for any jazz trio devotee. ~ Paula Edelstein
Personnel: Edward Simon (piano); John Patitucci (acoustic bass, electric bass); Brian Blade (drums).
Down Beat (p.62) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Pianist Edward Simon's trio exhibits exceptional balance on UNICITY, with John Patitucci's dark bass accentuating the leader's light touch." JazzTimes (p.99) - "Given his cross-cultural interdisciplinary background, the diversity of his music is not surprising, but its lucidity and richness and especially its poise are distinctive." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Simon has chops to spare but his concise, calm approach is a breath of fresh air." | | Kenny Garrett Beyond The Wall CD (2006)
Unicity
$15.65 On his first offering in three years, Kenny Garrett delivers the album that has been promised since his very auspicious debut Introducing Kenny Garrett back in 1984. On Beyond the Wall, the saxophonist and composer has continued his deep exploration of modal jazz. The album is dedicated to McCoy Tyner, the king and progenitor of modal pianists, and it sounds as if Garrett observed that tutelage well, though the music is unmistakably his own. The core band on the set features drummer Brian Blade, bassist Robert Hurst, and Mulgrew Miller on piano. Pharoah Sanders and Bobby Hutcherson appear on all but two of these nine cuts (Sanders appears on these, the ...

| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Unicity
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat ...
| | Yusef Lateef Sounds Of Yusef CD (1957)
Unicity
$13.95 Yusef Lateef was always a pacesetter in jazz. Even early in his career as a leader (1950's), he brought new elements, instruments and concepts to hard bop. 1957's THE SOUNDS OF YUSEF is no exception to this. Performing on tenor saxophone, flute and an obscure instrument called an argol (a double clarinet that resembles a bassoon) this album stands out in the jazz canon as an imaginative and highly creative musical statement.
One of the aspects of Lateef's music that is so lovely is that he never alienates listeners with oddity and musical eccentricity. Just when one begins to sense that the music has taken a turn towards incomprehensible weirdness, Lateef pulls back and delves into a deep-pocketed bop groove. This said, the solos by Lateef and his ...

| | Count Basie Swings - Joe Williams Sings CD (1956)
Unicity
$10.75 Count Basie's 1950s band had saxophonists Frank Foster, Frank Wess and Marshal Royal, Thad Jones on trumpet and of course, two of the most understated musicians to ever drive a rhythm section: guitarist Freddie Green and Basie himself on piano. But the presence of Joe Williams put the whole situation over the top. The point, on this recording, is that Williams sings the blues, and does so with undeniable conviction, unparalleled clarity and irrepressible humor.
COUNT BASIE SWINGS, JOE WILLIAMS SINGS is essential listening if only for the fact that it contains the five-minute jukebox hit "Every Day I Have The Blues." Ernie Wilkins' continually unfolding arrangement is a thing of breathtaking elegance, underpinning one of the most astonishing vocal performances in all of jazz. The less-celebrated Foster arrangement "The Comeback" is just as exciting, ...
