Kelly Willis and her spouse Bruce Robison both have a knack for writing simple, emotionally straightforward country tunes, and they know how to make them work in the studio with plenty of heart and soul and a low level of extraneous fluff. So it's good to see them release a collaborative album at last, even if it's a modest Christmas-themed effort, and Happy Holidays finds the couple in fine form together. Dominated by covers (Robison contributes the album's sole original, "Oklahoma Christmas," which sounds like a more concise and less snarky variation on Robert Earl Keen's "Merry Christmas from the Family"), Happy Holidays moves back and forth between seasonal torch songs (Willis sounds sexy indeed on "Santa Baby," and she and Robison are both playful and sensuous on "Baby, It's Cold Outside"), somber but celebratory numbers such as "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "A Winter's Tale" (delivered respectively by Willis and Robison with feeling and dignity), and twangy Yuletide tunes, such as Charlie Louvin's "Shut in at Christmas," Buck Owens' "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy," and the tongue-in-cheek "Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk." While the production and arrangements are elegant and concise, this hardly sounds like a tossed-together Christmas quickie, with the headliners and their backing musicians presenting these songs with care and affection, and if this isn't the twang-tastic holiday disc some might have expected, it delivers equal portions of taste, passion and great music, and anyone with an ear for either Willis or Robison will want to have this on hand for their tree-trimming party. ~ Mark Deming Kelly Willis Happy Holidays Songs Happy Holidays Review

Happy Holidays songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is ...
| | Legend CD (2007) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Happy Holidays album
$16.59 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back good times, so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his first band, Legend, was proto-pub, an unabashed celebration of old-time rock & roll, filled with three-chord Chuck Berry rockers and doo wop backing vocals. Nevertheless, listening to their 1970 LP is a bit of a shock, as it's completely disassociated with anything that was happening in 1970, even with Tony Visconti enlisted as their producer. Legend's sensibility is ahead of its time in its retro thinking, pointing the way to the rock & roll revival of the late '70s and not even that similar to the country-rock of Eggs Over Easy or Bees Make Honey, as this has little of the rustic feel of the Band: it's just straight-up oldies rock, a trait emphasized by those incessant doo wop harmonies that ...

Happy Holidays songs
$16.45 Hello, my name is Bill Ferrell and I'm hoping you'll take a second to read this and check out my music. I'm not sure what you're looking for in the music that you buy, but my music is honest and straight from the heart. Here is a review of my CD from Altoona, Pa's Classic Rock station Q94 FM.BILL FERRELL – BIKER’S PRAYER (no label) Bill Ferrell has been making music on area stages for 20 years, with such groups as The Smoke Run Band, the One Less Tear Band, and presently, local classic rockers Kyx. Ferrell’s first solo album, Biker’s Prayer, introduces us to his world, both musically and personally. The album offers an uplifting blend of heartland-styled rock, country and folk; as Ferrell sings and plays guitar, often supported by his Kyx bandmates; keyboardist Terry Wills, rhythm guitarists Jim Walstrom and Bill Moyer, bassist Glenn Walstrom and drummer Chris Sherkel. Ferrell’s love of motorcycles and riding is quickly obvious on the album’s opening title track, “Biker’s Prayer,” a celebration of the near-spiritual experience of riding on the open road. (An acoustic version of the song ends the album.) The country-flavored “883” celebrates the cherished ...
