String Cheese Incident member Bill Nershi takes a busman's holiday with Honkytonk Homeslice, the largely acoustic trio also featuring his wife, Jilian Nershi, on guitar and guitarist/mandolin player Scott Law. All three contribute songwriting and lead vocals on different tracks of their self-titled debut album. Bill Nershi's bluegrass tendencies are brought out in the format, and he is also allowed to take a backseat to his bandmates. Law proves a good songwriter in a traditional style, while Jilian Nershi, boasting a sturdy, country-inflected voice that recalls Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris, is the group's real find. The album does not suggest that Bill Nershi should think about quitting his musical day job any time soon, but his secondary group has a sound of its own that makes it a project worth pursuing in his free time. ~ William Ruhlmann
Honkytonk Homeslice: Scott Law (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin); Bill Nershi (vocals, acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, dobro, bass guitar); Jilian Nershi (vocals, acoustic guitar).
Additional personnel: Jim Watts (E-bow, bass guitar); Keith Moseley (bass guitar).
Dirty Linen (p.91) - "The disc exudes a friendly, front-porch vibe, with ragged-but-right harmonies..." | | Jack Casady Dream Factor CD (2003)
Honkytonk Homeslice music CDs
$11.29 Jack Casady first came to fame as an original member of the Jefferson Airplane and later, Hot Tuna. The first solo album (at age 59) from this well-traveled and prolific bassist, Dream Factor, is a mixed affair. Unlike most rock bass-playing frontmen, Casady does not sing, so his contributions to his debut are relegated to the occasional bass solo, and as co-writer of nearly all the tracks. His bass playing is more innovative and inspirational than his songwriting, which results in a passable Southern rock, folk, and blues album. Casady calls in friends from Gov't Mule (drummer Matt Abts and guitarist Warren Haynes), along with Little Feat guitarist Paul Barrére, Ivan Neville, and the Tubes' Fee Waybill, among others, to help with vocals, and all do an admirable job, but ultimately, the album rests on the strength of its songs, most of which are pleasant, vaguely West ...

| | Poco Running Horse CD (2002)
Honkytonk Homeslice album
$11.25 Though its cover art and title allude to Legend (1978), Poco's only real blockbuster album and last of any true merit, Running Horse, reaches back no further than the group's last studio album, 1989's Legacy, a cobbled together reunion album produced in part by Richard Marx. The production on Running Horse is equally weak, tentative, and thin, with dated highly guitar tones and studio feel. Surprisingly little of founder Rusty Young's famous pedal steel work is evident, odd considering his prowess on that instrument helped introduce it to the non-country world ...
| | Black Sabbath Mob Rules CD (1981) Import; Remastered
Honkytonk Homeslice CD music
$12.79 Black Sabbath had put itself back on track both musically and commercially with the 1980 album HEAVEN AND HELL, as the addition of new vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the shot in the arm Sabbath needed. A follow-up was released one year later, MOB RULES, which follows in the same mega-decibel approach as its predecessor. While it is still a vast improvement over Sabbath's final two albums with Ozzy Osbourne (1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE), it doesn't exactly match the inspired performances and top compositions ...

Simon's 1991 free concert in New York's Central Park was something of a homecoming for the Queens-born singer-songwriter. Several years earlier, his Central Park concert with erstwhile partner Art Garfunkel ...

| | Two Loons For Tea CD (2001)
Honkytonk Homeslice music CDs
$8.89 Two Loons for Tea's self-titled debut is an innovative and lively recording that is brought to life by members of Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, Living Daylights, Critters Buggin, and King Crimson. This recording was crafted by a slew of guest musicians, but at the center of the project are two gifted artists who have eloquently and articulately brought their musical ideas and cross-genre influences to the fore: Jonathan Kochmer and Sarah Scott. Kochmer and Scott's musical and artistic bond is quite apparent on this record, and the unity that you hear in their recordings lets you know that they've mastered the art of collaborative songwriting. Kochmer's introspective guitar playing is the nucleus of the songs that make up this recording, and Scott's vocals and lyrics compliment the guitar so well that it seems that these two individual timbral voices are one. The music on Two Loons for Tea moves between somber and lively; the emotional landscape in between is bridged by a variety of ethnic and orchestral instruments -- including vibes, viola, erhu, and tabla -- that seem to breathe new life into the compositions just at the time where they become too pop-oriented, thus providing a bit of an experimental and eclectic streak to most of the works that make up this recording. This is an interesting recording that's quite dark and elusive. This recording has a bit of a singer/songwriter feel, but it's more eclectic and more diverse than most of the recordings in that genre, thus making it hard to pin this down to a specific genre. Fans of good music that's both fresh and interesting will be pleased with this release. ~ Matt Borghi

| | Popol Vuh Seligpreisung CD (1974)
Honkytonk Homeslice album
$13.85 Released in 1973, Seligpreisung was, if anything, a complete shock after the gorgeous "religious" rock of Hosianna Mantra. Gone are the hypnotic Gregorian chants and overtone layers of drone. In their place is a kind of shimmering, spacy jazz-rock where, despite a few instances of Florian Fricke chant-singing, the effect is one where his piano becomes the steadiest backdrop, playing hypnotic, repetitive chords and phrases while Conny Veit improvises with David Gilmour-like blues guitar phrases over the gently swirling music. Elsewhere, the rest of the group (the same cats who played on Hosianna Mantra) is heard in classically tinged miniatures that float through the mix with a kind of meandering insistence on instantly recognizable Western thematics and standard conceptions of beauty rather than confrontations -- however subtle -- with the East/West space-time continuum. This is not to say that Seligpreisung is a disappointment; rather, it is only a shock for its giant step backward into the realm of the conventional. ...
