Look at the band name, look at the cover art, look at the album title and even the label, and you get a pretty good idea of what to expect from this disc: huge chainsaw guitars, double-bass drums, tricky time changes and lots of screaming, maybe some of it in that Cookie Monster voice that we've all come to love so much. Right? Wrong. Opening with a spare intro consisting of tom-toms, orchestral strings, a hint of electronica and, okay, just a little bit of yelling, the Black Maria's A Shared History in Tragedy knocks your preconceptions over and then proceeds to run roughshod over them for the remainder of the album's length. That's not to say that their guitars aren't plenty loud, or that their singing isn't plenty aggressive -- it's just that the aggression and noise are consistently harnessed in the service of both great pop hooks and, as often as not, genuinely complex song structures. Note, for example, the structural intricacy and sharp melodicism (and yelling) of "Perilous Curse"; it's a pattern than holds true through such other aggro-pop fare as "Van Gogh" and "Call to Arms" as well. There are a couple of weird moments, like the choral outro on the bizarrely titled "Thief in the Ranks (Your Bike)," and anyone who can deliver the line "I'm a tightrope walker and a vagabond poet who was killed for an artist's guilt" with a straight face needs to be smacked soundly about the head and shoulders a few times. But that sound. Geez. It's like a missile factory run by the Beach Boys. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Shared History Of Tragedy Music Black Maria Shared History Of Tragedy Songs Shared History Of Tragedy Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Promising A Shared History of Tragedy is a fairly promising album. The sound is fresh, for once a band is willing to put screaming guitars in music that's not scream-o. The songwriting itself has a little ways to go before it's topnotch, but songs like Waking Up With the Wolves and Van Gogh carry the cd. I like how they mix the songs up, not every song sounds exactly like the rest. (See 10 Years) I expect the Black Maria to come out with an absolutely killer cd within the next 5 years, but right now this cd deserves a listen. If every song was as good as Waking Up With the Wolves this cd would be unbelievable, but that can be said of almost every early cd any band comes out with. Something fresh for a change! I regret that I didn't grow up listening to the likes of New Day Rising; Zyon; Grade; and Far from Heroes that would combine to be the perfect combo that would blast this CD to smithereens on my boombox. That amazes me. Surreal! Really amazing! Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It just doesn't get better than this. From the perfect lyrics to the amazing vocal power Chris has at his disposal, and from the powerful melodies and dark hooks to the stunning guitar work, this album is one hell of a ride - one that no matter how many times you ride, will leave you anticipating the next. 'A Shared History Of Tragedy' will suck you in, chew you up, and spit you out in little peices. These people make Linkin Park and Evanescence look like amatuers. Give them a go, I bet you'll agree by the end of the fourth track. Submitted by Benjamin (Stafford, Virginia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
