The debut album by Dallas-based indie quartet the Hourly Radio has one of those singles, "Crime Does Pay," that instantly grabs the listener's attention by sounding vaguely like any number of other bands, but better: the disco-fied bassline nods to Franz Ferdinand, the droning guitars are U2 filtered through Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and there's an overall sense of new wave revival that never quite devolves into early-MTV mimicry the way it can in some band's less capable hands. Singer Aaron Closson's clear, high-pitched vocals are the Hourly Radio's secret weapon, as shown in his effortless falsetto hooks throughout the aggrieved "Deaf Ears," but his angsty lyrics are also their weakest aspect. Ignore the overall sense of wounded romanticism that permeates the songs to focus on the impressive sense of arrangement that's evident on bits like the ghostly, keyboard-heavy intro to album opener "Travelsigns" and also the Radiohead/Coldplay feeling of epic scope that's evident throughout and the charms of History Will Never Hold Me are clearer. ~ Stewart Mason

A band comprised of two brothers who are the offspring of celebrated songwriter Jimmy Webb, this album from the Webb Brothers is comprised of well-crafted songs that may even make Jimmy green with envy.
The third album from the brothers Webb sees the duo becoming a trio with the addition of youngest brother James Webb and languishing in the same dreamy pop realm they've inhabited in the past. Although they dallied in roots rock in the past, this self-titled album worships sun-drenched Californian beachscapes and bounces along to pop vibes straight out of the mid-'70s. A huge debt seems to be owed to inspirations including Elliott Smith, Joe Pernice, Big Star, Randy Newman, and, on "A Funny Ol' Kind of Music" and "Ms. Moriarty," the synths and sampler-based sound of New Order. For better or worse, the album has two identities. Through its first seven tracks, there's a lively mix of alt-country undertones, Spanish guitar, Brit-pop and chamber pop arrangements, and lively basement-style experimentation. This is a pretty unusual release -- a two-disc album documenting two live DJ sets as performed on Valentine's Day weekend of 2004 by deep house legends Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. Each DJ's set is presented in unedited form on one of the two discs. Both programs are perfectly fine and either will rock the party thoroughly, but Carter's set is maybe the more consistently adventurous and interesting of the two, keeping the beats reliably solid and steady while imposing distortions and subtle syncopations that make the rhythms sound funkier than they really are -- note especially his artful treatment of Moodlex's "Just One Look [Jacob London Remix]" and his dub-inflected take on "Computer Madness" by Steve Poindexter. As for Farina, he too does a good job of creating a constantly shifting pastiche of textures and flavors within the basic house framework, though with perhaps a bit less sparkling creativity. He holds the jazz elements to a minimum on this set, focusing instead on Chicago-flavored fare like Cajmere's "Conflict" and Vibezelect's strange but soulful "Do What You Know."
