Despite Captain Bradford's (Andre Braugher) pleas for people to remain calm in the ballroom, a small group of people go against his orders and attempt to make their own way to the bottom of the ship, which is now the only section above water. Led by a low-rent gambler named Dylan (Josh Lucas) and the onetime mayor of New York City, Ramsey (Kurt Russell), and including a suicidal architect (Richard Dreyfuss), the former mayor's daughter (Emmy Rossum) and her fiancé (Mike Vogel), a stowaway (Mia Maestro), and a single mother (Jacinda Barrett) and her young son (Jimmy Bennett), they band together as they battle the elements, fight to save their lives, and learn something about themselves along the way. Although the special effects are cutting-edge, starting with the long, complex opening shot, Petersen makes sure to instill humanity into the characters, letting the film be driven by the story, not just the mechanics. To ensure the integrity of the project, one of the executive producers is Sheila Allen, who was married to disaster master Irwin Allen (producer of such films as THE TOWERING INFERNO, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, and THE SWARM) until his death in 1991, and played Gina Rowe in THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (under her maiden name, Sheila Mathews). Poseidon Movie Review  Very good entertainment
We like this movie a lot. It's never boring, always something happening and the special effects are fantastic. We think it's a much better film than Titanic.
It's a very good movie for people who like action and adventure.

 An Adventure.
I thought this movie was great. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Makes me really question if I will ever take a cruise. I think the moral of the story was very good & it made me cry in some parts. It reminded me of Titanic with parts of Armageddon in it.

Poseidon is an especially unnecessary remake. As happens so often with remakes, the re-makers squander the original’s appeal, as if they have no idea why 1972’s The Poseidon Adventure was a hit. Video games must have influenced the film, too. As an intrepid group of characters make their way through the bowels of an overturned ocean liner, they’re tested by one chamber of death after another.
The original film is in large part a series of compartmentalized challenges for the survivors, too, but that film’s major appeal exists elsewhere.
The Poseidon Adventure is one of those movies that pulls people in whenever they happen to run across it during a channel-surfing session. The cast features four Oscar winners: Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters, Ernest Borgnine and Red Buttons. Dynamic interaction between the film’s characters — especially Hackman’s preacher and Borgnine’s explosive cop — help the film transcend its pulpy script.
The Poseidon Adventure remake is far less gripping, even though it was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, whose 1981 film, Das Boot (The Boat), is a masterpiece of submerged suspense.
Kurt Russell leads the cast as a former New York City mayor who happens to be an ex-fireman. The latter profession comes in handy after a so-called rogue wave strikes the ocean liner Russell and his daughter, played by Emily Rossum, are on.
Poseidon introduces its soon-to-be survivors during a prelude that reveals almost nothing about them. Joining Russell and Rossum are Mike Vogel as Rossum’s clandestine fiancé; Josh Lucas as a professional gambler; Richard Dreyfuss as an aging architect who’s just broken up with his boyfriend; Jacinda Barrett as a widowed single mom; and Jimmy Bennett as her son. Mia Maestro and Freddy Rodriguez survive the capsizing, but their heroism is quickly rewarded with death.
Knowing so little about Poseidon’s characters, it’s difficult to care about their fates. On the contrary, characters in The Poseidon Adventure are practically members of the family. Thirty-four years from now, when entertainment consumers of tomorrow are tapping the movies-on-demand chip in their brains, they probably won’t pick a floundering 2006 movie called Poseidon.
