| | Elmo Hope All-Star Sessions CD (1976)
Elucidations LSD music CDs
$9.59 Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This single-CD reissues all of the music (except for a second take of "Moe, Jr.") formerly on a two-LP set having the same name and catalog number. Before that, the music originally came out on the Prestige album Informal Jazz and the Riverside release Homecoming. The often-overlooked pianist/composer Elmo Hope is heard in three different settings. He first heads a four-song jam session (two swinging originals and a couple of standards) that has lengthy solos from trumpeter Donald Byrd and the contrasting tenors John Coltrane and Hank Mobley, along with fine support from bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Jones. The 1961 dates consist of a sextet outing with trumpeter Blue Mitchell and the tenors of Jimmy Heath and Frank Foster, plus four numbers played with the trio from the album (which has bassist Percy Heath and drummer Philly Joe Jones). Other than a version of "Imagination," all of the selections from 1961 are Hope's intriguing and ultimately logical originals. Excellent music from an underrated great. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Teratism Service For The Damned CD (2005) (Import)
Elucidations LSD music CDs
$12.59 Massachusetts death metalers TERATISM go for the throat on their second album, Service For The Damned. Everything about this band is brutal, from their pummeling riffs to their dual vocal assault and the relentless drumming. The album begins with "Desire For The Demented", which tackles the heart warming topic of necrobestiality (also known as sex with dead animals). This song goes back and forth between fast, technical riffs and slow and brutal ones, an approach the band takes throughout much of the album.Next is "Eternal Retribution" which has a lot of speed but also a bunch of heavy mid-tempo riffs as well as sick breakdowns. The drumming is also impressive as well, with lots of changing tempos and cool double bass patterns. This song also has an awesome solo trade off section between the two guitarists."Still Life" begins with an awesome riff that is a little more melodic than most of the material on the album. This song has some interesting lyrics as well, about murder for the sake of art. There are also some cool high shrieked vocals."Disturbing The Colony" is another decent song, but doesn't really stand out among the other songs. There is a cool rapid vocal trade off towards the end though."Ripped From The Womb" is one of the strongest tracks on the album. All the riffs are very brutal but really catchy as well. There is also a ripping solo as well as more devastating breakdowns. The ...

| | Hugh Masekela Time CD (2002)
Elucidations LSD CD music
$6.05 Since his return to South Africa in 1990, Hugh Masekela has become a national musical icon. And his music has taken on more of the flavor of his homeland, too, all of which is quite in evidence on Time. Of course, this being Masekela, he's not going to be penned into one style, as he shows on "Conchita," his bubbling celebration of Latin music, which name-checks every icon of the genre. But it's township jazz that's always been at the backbone of his sound, and it's there in his revisiting of "Part of a Whole," which he first recorded over 30 years ago. Even if it's township lite these days, more accessible than the real hardcore stuff, there's no doubt his heart is very much in the right place. He's not afraid to be political, either, touching on civil rights, dictators, and reminding people that an older generation hasn't necessarily lost touch with enjoying the pleasures of the world. From South African gospel to the slightly rougher feel of mbaqanga, and even the more contemporary kwaito (South Africa's disco-fied version of hip-hop) on "Old People, Young Folks," this album keeps its feet on the ground at home. About the only thing missing is that Masekela focuses more on his gritty, warm vocals, rather than his excellent trumpet playing. But he seems happy enough with that, and the sense of jubilation surrounding the disc glows peacefully. ~ Chris Nickson
