Goa Vol. 14-Goa album
$20.19 09 collection marking the Hyperdub label’s fifth anniversary. CD1 has new recordings by the likes of Burial, Cooly G, Darkstar, Flying Lotus, Ikonika, Joker & Ginz, King Midas Sound & more. CD2 features unreleased tracks, rarities & vinyl only 12 inches from label’s back catalogue, many making their first ever appearance on CD. 32 tracks.
Not to slight other dubstep-rooted labels productive from 2005 through 2009--Tectonic, Deep Medi, Hessle Audio--but this half-new/half-retrospective set supplies all the evidence necessary in determining the form's supreme source. Released to acknowledge the fifth anniversary of Kode9's Hyperdub, these two discs, assembled in the wake of 30-plus 12" releases and three albums, should be the starting point for anyone late to the party. There is a slight catch, though: only a fraction of the contents is truly dubstep. In short, dubstep extends and mutates dub, drum'n'bass, U.K. garage, and grime in various permutations. That the first disc contains the new material speaks to the label's desire to continue pushing. It does not quite surpass the second disc of past highlights, yet it's nothing short of generous. A handful of comrades who hadn't previously appeared on the label, like Flying Lotus and Martyn, make appearances; ...

Goa Vol. 14-Goa album
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," ...

| | Cary Fridley Neighbor Girl CD (2001)
Goa Vol. 14-Goa music CDs
$18.99 As the feisty frontwoman of North Carolina's popular old-timey revivalists the Freight Hoppers, Cary Fridley was akin to a force of nature. Her shrill yelp and heavily strummed guitar propelled breakneck renditions of traditional mountain favorites like a locomotive engine. For her self-released solo debut, Fridley has changed up her musical approach. Her renderings of songs first made popular (at least regionally and among hardcore fans) by the likes of the Carter Family and Frank Proffitt sound downright reserved and less kinetic and chaotic than her work with her previous band. On Neighbor Girl Fridley's voice is more expressive than ever, too, a more finely tuned instrument. She sounds as if she was born to sing of the troubles and simple joys that define old-timey mountain music. ~ Brian Beatty
