| | Shadow: Hed Sessions CD (2001)
Twilight Children CD music
$6.19 Earlier in 2001, the Shadow Records compilation titled Hard Sessions showcased the label's impressive stable of artists working in the drum'n'bass, techno, and lo-fi beat disciplines. Hed Sessions focuses on more down-tempo moods, featuring such artists as Goo, Mujaji, Hybrid Device, and Merkin. It's an outstanding compilation that demonstrates the rich variety of styles that fall under the "down-tempo" rubric: Merkin's "The Sauce" balances lightly between jazzy drum'n'bass and ambient trip-hop, while Saru's "Intro/Posterity (Dark Star Mix)" layers a funky ...

| | Om: Chilled V.2: Relax, Recline, Unwind... CD (2008)
Twilight Children songs
$11.99 No label does chillout music better than Om, and the Chilled series distills Om's varied catalog into the aural equivalent of a refreshing one-hour nap -- not a bored, irritable nap, but the kind you take after a hard day of skiing and before hitting the club. Much of it is not really suitable for dancing -- "Really," by Bluemind, has a beat, but you have to listen hard to find it, while Techno Squirrels' similarly beatwise "Love Comes First" is dominated by a lovely tune (and strangely off-kilter lyrics) delivered by a breathy singer. There is funkier material here as well, but in keeping with the album's theme, it's mostly quite slow and languorous in tone. Notable among these tracks are the "Omganic Mix" of "Hey," a sleepy and stripped-down piece of borderline trip-hop by Stolen Identity, and Edison Gem's "Lullaby," which, despite its title and its gentle acoustic guitar-driven arrangement, is funky in a pretty sharp and sturdy way (though its lyrics, including the baffling couplet "The audience of you/Brings my heart to its knees," are considerably less sharp and sturdy). On the slightly more uptempo side are the jazzily swinging "Bluetech's Mountain High Mix" of "Garden of Your Mind" by Hawke and the joyfully skipping Latin groove of Home & Garden's "Cortez." One or two tracks -- notably the somnolent "Inner Peace" by Aaron Sontag and Nica Brooke -- are maybe just a little bit too chilled for their own good, and veer just a little bit too close to the line (and granted, it's a fuzzy one) that separates groovy ambience from sappy new age. But this is an excellent ...

| | Haywire Don't Just Stand There CD (1987) Import
Twilight Children songs
$19.55 Haywire made Don't Just Stand There their strongest release, with tracks like "Dance Desire" and "Black and Blue" draped in rhythms led by rather unsophisticated guitar and keyboard riffs and a bubblegum rock savoir faire aimed at a teenage crowd. Produced by Brian Allen, the album's songs are mainly about breaking up and breaking out, and although the manufactured angst is a bit facetious, the songs aren't without some contagious merit. "Fire" packs a catchy beat, and "One Heart Affair" and "Hard Reaction" are dancefloor rockers in the same vein as Bon Jovi or Warrant. "Thinkin' About the Years" is an average-sounding ballad as well that shows a hint of maturity. Don't Just Stand There helped Haywire gain cross-country awareness, as their debut album, Bad Boys, sold best on Canada's east coast, the band's stomping grounds. The albums that followed, especially Get Off, are directionless and ...
