The members of Widespread Panic seem to have contented themselves with the notion of the band's audience being exactly what it is. Given the records they've issued in the last couple of years, they no longer seem ambitious about growing to reach anyone else. (For one thing, when was the last time the band did a studio recording?) This is too bad, because the world of popular music is almost always one of diminishing returns: if a band has no ambition, many of its own fans will eventually grow tired and look elsewhere for excitement. Live at Myrtle Beach is a rote set by a band that is increasingly becoming rote in its method and expression. COST OF LIVING features McClinton's distinctively twangy takes on blues, rock, and R&B, as best showcased on the witty, rollicking opener, "One of the Fortunate Few," and the pleading "I'll Change My Style"--which could serve as a tongue-in-cheek anthem for his own subtly shifting aesthetic.

Like most of the bootleg recordings of Charlie Parker, made by audience members on primitive equipment, the sound quality of BIRD ON 52ND ST. is poor. Nevertheless, despite surface noise and an imbalanced "mix" (Duke Jordan's piano and Miles Davis' trumpet can hardly be heard), there are some outstanding examples of Parker's art. At the time of this recording Parker had just returned from recuperating in a mental hospital in California and was, surprisingly, playing better than ever.

Lennon is, evidently, at least some rock critic's idea of a wet dream, given her extensive prerelease coverage in Rolling Stone early in 2001 before her debut, 5:30 Saturday Morning, was unleashed. Maybe it's easy to see why -- she is, after all, a teenager who not only shares a name with St. John, but she cannily fuses Alanis Morissette and Lilith Fair with a balls-out, post-industrial alt-metal attack that would sound comfortable at Ozzfest. Somebody was probably waiting for that combination (although it's hard to imagine exactly who -- a handful of teenagers, perhaps, or maybe a bunch of guys raised on NIN who harbor a secret crush on Jewel) and it is rather startling to hear, especially because there's so much awkwardness ...
