Purchase 18 Greatest CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Carrie Underwood Play On CD (2009)
18 Greatest album
$11.17 Daisy in her hair aside, Carrie Underwood looks flat-out glamorous on the cover of PLAY ON, which is a pretty fair indication of what awaits listeners on her third album. Carrie is still nominally a country artist and sometimes will sing supported by fiddles and steel guitar, but this is crossover pop pure and simple, whether it's the thundering rhythms on the Shania-styled strut "Cowboy Casanova" or the succession of maudlin melodies on the preponderance of power ballads. Carrie takes a much stronger presence as a writer here, co-authoring seven of the 13 songs, and she's attracted to hookless showstoppers designed to showcase her powerful voice. When she sticks to tunes written solely by the professionals, PLAY ON does have some slick pleasures, particularly on the breezy ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CDs (2008) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
18 Greatest CD music
$13.99 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. ...

| | Nina Storey Bootleg CD (1996)
18 Greatest album
$8.55 Nina Storey's live album Bootleg builds on the blues-inflected, singer-songwriter style of her first album and adds more jazz and soul elements to the mix, especially on "The Wanderer," "9/10" "The Lonely One," and "Left." She returns to more familiar territory on the charged, heartfelt "Tough Break" and "Coffee and Margaritas," and funks it up on "Bitchy Love Song," proving that Storey's talent is as wide as it is deep. ~ Heather Phares

| | Rebecca Riots Gardener CD (2000)
18 Greatest CD music
$14.75 It's no surprise that this acoustic folk trio hails from Berkeley, CA. What is somewhat surprising is that this album, the female group's fourth, came out in 2000: It sounds more than a little like something out of the late '60s. Mingling love songs with treatises on everything from the military to gay rights to police brutality, the trio generally eschews metaphor in favor of straightforward statements like "No one wants to start a confrontation, but it doesn't help to simply walk away/Do we let them convince us that the only way is war?" At times, the approach is refreshing, at times tedious, but even when the lyrics miss their mark, the group draws strength from its indelible melodies and first-rate vocalizing. If you liked such outfits as Indigo Girls and, earlier, Joy of Cooking, this is worth a listen. ~ Jeff Burger
"Gardener" is the fourth release (and first for Appleseed) by this Berkeley, California-based trio of women who were voted "Best Band with a Conscience" by San Francisco's Bay Guardian. Their music, performed acoustically, embodies the gentle yet powerful energy that has driven these singers/songwriters/musicians to downsize their teaching careers and carry their songs ...

| | Mountain Bluebirds CD (2006)
18 Greatest songs
$18.99 THE MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS play mostly bluegrass music, mostly in western Canada, and mostly in the evening. The Bluebirds always provide a good time for anyone in earshot, always mind their manners, and always look sharp on stage. Six members have they, three gals and three guys, playing instruments including bass, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo. Much of the music was written by members of the band and includes brisk fiddle tunes, songs from the heart, songs from the feet, songs about hope, chance, bends in rivers and even some about good meals. The Bluebirds perform at a wide variety of venues depending on the type of audience. You might catch them at a bar, a restaurant, or a nightclub but potentially also at a swap meet, a regatta, a carnival, a ribbon cutting and maybe even a pancake breakfast. Go out and see them when they get close - no one gets out without a smile.LORRAINE COBB • Guitar, vocals • Along with Connie Jean, Lorraine is the other founder of the Bluebirds - she was there when it all started. Lorraine is known for her stylish guitar playing, her collection of fabulous dresses, and her interest in fine hors d'ouvres. Hailing originally from Kamloops, she spends her spare time seeking new restaurants, live music of any kind, and lounging in her newly expanded home.CONNIE JEAN THIESSEN • Guitar, vocals • A charter member of The Mountain Bluebirds and editor/founder of the now defunct Bluegrass North Magazine, Connie Jean started the band with pal Lorraine when they discovered a mutual passion for bluegrass music. As the second tallest Bluebird, Connie's guitar headstock often comes dangerously close to severely altering the dental work of her bandmates. VALERIE BAILEY • Bass • Val generally stands at the back of the stage and smiles calmly at all the rest of the lunatics in the band. However, inside her burns an intense passion, an inferno even, for long walks, good bluegrass festivals and for playing her fine Kay double bass. A woman who has worn a lot hats, including a stint on commercial fish boats, Val packs a wallop.BRAD GILLARD • Banjo, vocals • Brad handles banjo and vocal duties with The Mountain Bluebirds. He ...
