This film takes place during the early days of broadcast journalism in 1950's America. It chronicles the real-life conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff - headed by his producer Fred Friendly and Joe Wershba in the CBS newsroom - defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts'. Director: George Clooney. Actors: Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn, Frank Langella, George Clooney, Robert Downey, Jr., Tate Donovan.

With GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, George Clooney delivers a riveting account of a crucial chapter in 20th-century American history and, in the process, firmly establishes himself as a major force behind the camera as well. The crisply paced, tautly scripted docudrama recounts the events of the mid-1950s leading up to acclaimed CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow's (David Strathairn) decision to stand up against fiery Senator Joseph McCarthy, who was out to rid the country of communism. McCarthy's seemingly reckless behavior, in which he condemned individuals without giving them a fair trial, angered Murrow and his producer Fred Friendly (Clooney) into action. The resulting few episodes of Murrow's show, SEE IT NOW, found Murrow on a personal, patriotic crusade to challenge McCarthy and rid America of his callous persecution. Set almost entirely inside the smoke-filled, pressurized newsrooms at CBS, Clooney's assured picture moves at a breakneck pace. Cinematographer Robert Elswit miraculously recreates the black-and-white look of that era, giving the film an added air of legitimacy. And while Clooney and co-screenwriter/producer Grant Heslov wisely chose to use stock footage of McCarthy instead of finding an actor to fill his shoes, they couldn't have found a better Murrow than Strathairn, who delivers his lines with heroic conviction. Clooney's stellar ensemble cast also includes Ray Wise, Patricia Clarkson, Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Daniels, and Frank Langella.

Theatrical Release: October 7, 2005

Good Night, And Good Luck Reviews:

"[A] passionate, thoughtful essay on power, truth-telling and responsibility."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Clooney emerges as a powerhouse filmmaker....Clooney has crafted a period piece that speaks potently to [the] here-and-now..." -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"David Strathairn plays Murrow, a performance eerily on the money and tinged with irony....The extensive footage of McCarthy is artfully integrated."-- Mike Clark, USA Today

"[A] marvel of classic restraint in a hopped-up film culture. Shot in elegant black and white with impeccable ensemble acting and moody jazz riffs for a soundtrack, it wouldn't exist except for the lonely passion of director, co-writer and costar George Clooney."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[W]hen the movie's at is smartest, it's dazzlingly bright....David Stratharin, playing Murrow, follows his writers' lead beautifully, delivering a performance that's all understatement on the surface and searing fire underneath." -- Glenn Kenny, Premiere

"[A]n energized sliver of history, smart, sharp, and lively, staged with enjoyable panache..." -- Grade: B+-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"David Strathairn's extraordinary performance dominates the film with its gravitas, pathos and even a streak of deadpan humour."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound

5 stars out of 5 -- "[C]ontinually astonishing for its poise and its impeccable attention to detail....Clooney achieves his objectives with clarity and concision."-- Adam Sweeting, Uncut

"Righteous and superbly evocative of the era, the film also reacquaints us with a more sophisticated yesteryear, when media stars had principles, spoke in full paragraphs, and faced down the corrupt..." -- Michael Atkinson, Movieline's Hollywood Life

"Strathairn's subtle and serious Oscar-nominated performance demands the respect of his audience." -- Widescreen Review Staff, Widescreen Review

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] well-judged and well-timed Clooney lament about the state of television journalism in a trying age..." -- Jonathan Dean, Total Film

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] healthy reminder that in any political crisis, history is always the final judge." -- David Richardson, Ultimate DVD

5 stars Great Film
It's neat how the word "Communist" ends up having the same meaning as "terrorist" these days. Only bad thing about the Blu-Ray was the Special Features would lock up.

3 stars David Strathairn's breakout performance
I would'nt say that this is one of the best movies of the year, but it's still a good movie.David Strathairn's portrayl of Edward R. Murrow is impressive and definetly Oscar-worthy.Strathairn's performance is the only one worth mentioning. The rest of the cast is just dull and boring.I really liked how they made the movie in black and white which gave it more of a classy feel.If you grew up in the 1950s you probably would understand and enjoy this movie more than I did because this happened way before my time.

5 stars My fav movie of 2005
This movie highlights the state of American television in 1950's and is very educational to younger Americans and people who live outside the USA. Television pretty much started out in America first and when television networks started appearing in other countries politicians looked at the mistakes of American TV which was often seen as vulgar because they were totally market driven. This movie highlights that. One of the many issues in this movie they do not want to cover a story in fear of losing a sponsor which could even close the network. The film also show how the networks did not have a clear break from the TV show being aired to a commercial. Indeed one moment the presenter could be talking about the news then move on to the newest fridge freezer that you must have! Which is something I like about the movie... ITV in Britain is a good example of an over regulated Network because of the pure panic of the risk of being like an American Network. After a pretty much re-launch in the 1960's or 70's The Network had rating problems because they were not allowed to make TV show they wanted to make to get viewers - American style type TV game shows and other American style shows.... This DVD really just shows the reasons why American TV put the fear of God in other countries more so the UK in regards of commercial television. If you live in the UK just make sure your DVD player is set to region 0 (zero) and your DVD player can convert the NTSC standard to PAL (The American TV standard to British)
