The Continental revels in precision-dance joy, Cole Porter's Night and Day sways with timeless grace and Fred and Ginger's first top billing sets the tone for more film hits to come. Academy Award (1934): Best Original Song - The Continental. A lively adaptation of the stage musical, which featured Astaire and his sister, Adele and the first film in which Astaire and Rogers actually received star billing. While vacationing at an English seaside resort, a soon-to-be-divorced woman mistakes a lovestruck song-and-dance man for her paid co-respondent. As usual, the plot's not important when you see these two and hear classics like Cole Porter's Night and Day. Academy Award Nominations: 5, including Best Picture. Songs include: "The Continental," "Night and Day," "Looking for a Needle in a Haystack," "Let's K-nock K-nees," "Don't Let It Bother You."

$14.85 The fifth sublime teaming of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, SWING TIME is regarded by many as their finest film. The tenuous plot, which mainly serves to connect the brilliant dance numbers, concerns John "Lucky" Garnett (Astaire), a gambler and professional dancer. When Garnett arrives late to his wedding, his prospective father-in-law implements a punishment, insisting that Garnett raise $25,000 before he can marry Margaret Watson (Betty Furness). Still in tails, he hops a freight for New York, where he gets involved in a scrape with dance instructor Penny Carrol (Rogers). After following her to the dance studio, Lucky poses ...

$10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the ...

$13.55 Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by. He completes short-term audits for a large firm, but doesn't really feel any connection to his employer and finds it difficult to make friends at his assignments since he's never there for long. Jonathan's circumstances change overnight when charming lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) befriends him. In an instant, the shy accountant is playing doubles tennis with his new friend and beautiful women and visiting upscale clubs. Just as mild-mannered Jonathan is getting used to his new lifestyle, Wyatt leaves town on business. When Jonathan finds himself mistakenly in possession of Wyatt's cell phone, he also discovers a whole new world of anonymous sex in elite Manhattan hotels with powerful women known simply as "The List." But soon Jonathan is in over his head: he's the prime suspect when a woman goes missing, and the ...

$7.09 YESTERDAY, TODAY, and TOMORROW from director Vittorio De Sica features the most popular male and female leads of the Italian 20th century cinema, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. Directed by Vittorio De Sica (THE BICYCLE THIEF, THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS), and costumed by Christian Dior, the film exploits the enormous sex appeal of both stars in three short tales set against three historic Italian cities. The first, Adelina of Naples, details the comic trials of a woman caught selling contraband cigarettes to support herself and her unemployed husband (Mastroianni). When her husband discovers that under Italian law a woman cannot be imprisoned until six months after her pregnancy ends, Loren and Mastroianni seize the moment to produce ...

$12.85 Joan Mitchell (Jan White) is bored with her suburban existence. She is plagued by nightmares involving a man in a demon mask. With an uncommunicative teenage daughter and a husband who is always away on business, she searches for something to fill the void. She becomes intrigued by a practicing witch who lives in the neighborhood, and soon her interest in the black arts becomes more than casual. While learning her craft, she successfully tries a spell that allows her to seduce her daughter's boyfriend. Soon, though, Joan becomes convinced that her husband is responsible for the unpleasantness in her life, and it isn't long before her efforts turn murderous.
Romero's third film (after NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and the little-seen THERE'S ALWAYS VANILLA) finds him in a distinctly experimental mode when compared to his other works. Though it relies on clear-cut horror elements (certain sequences are quite chilling), it frequently seems that the director was aiming more for ...
