| | Gregory Abbott Rhyme & Reason CD Gregory Abbott Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This compilation came out in two forms, released only months apart by different labels under Sony BMG. The content is the same, and so is the photo of Gregory Abbott that appears on the front sleeves. The Sony BMG version is dressed slightly better, and doesn't look nearly as cheap as Collectables' Priceless Collection version. The discs contain all four of Abbott's charting singles -- "Shake You Down" (his big hit, provided in two mixes), "I Got the Feelin' (It's Over)," "I'll Prove It to You," and "Let Me Be Your Hero." While it might seem silly to assemble a compilation that covers only two studio albums, Sony BMG likely found it sillier to keep those two albums in print -- so here's a set that will set you back a few measly bucks. ~ Andy Kellman Gregory Abbott Rhyme & Reason Songs Rhyme & Reason Music Review Purchase Rhyme & Reason CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
Rhyme & Reason album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. ...

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Rhyme & Reason songs
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big Joe Turner tunes, the Ahmet Ertegun penned "Chains of ...

Though it was King Pleasure's rollicking "Moody's Mood for Love" that popularized jazz vocalese (singing fresh lyrics to pre-existing jazz solos), it was Jon Henricks who developed the concept beyond that of a hermetic hipster's lullaby. Inspired by the ultra ...

| | Lou Beatty's Detroit Soul: Thirty Rare Gems From The Vaults Of La Beat Records CD (2006)
Rhyme & Reason CD music
$17.19 While Motown was far and away the biggest R&B label in Detroit during the '60s and '70s, they weren't the only game in town, and Lou Beatty was one of many entrepreneurs who tried to steal a bit of Berry Gordy's thunder with his La Beat label, which released a small but steady stream of records from 1965 to 1971. La Beat didn't score any significant hits outside of Michigan during its lifespan, and a listen to Lou Beatty's Detroit Soul: Thirty Rare Gems from the Vaults of La Beat Records shows why -- Beatty's crew of artists, songwriters, and musicians lacked the polish and craft of what Motown was doing on the other side of town, while failing to match the passion and funk the Southern soul ...
