| | Thelonious Monk Round Midnight CD Thelonious Monk Discography of CDs
With his odd rhythmic spacing, discordant resolves, and his circular yet angular compositional style, Thelonious Monk remains one of the most singular figures in all of jazz, and virtually every one of his recordings is as enigmatic as the pianist himself was. This set draws from his various Blue Note sessions held between 1947 and 1957, and includes early versions of several Monk classics like "'Round Midnight," "Ruby, My Dear," "Monk's Mood," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Epistrophy." All of this material is readily available elsewhere (most notably in Mosaic's Complete Blue Note Recordings box set) and there isn't anything singular about this collection, but it gets the job done as a quick introduction to one of jazz's most insular figures. ~ Steve Leggett Thelonious Monk Round Midnight Songs | 1. | 'Round Midnight | $0.99 | |

Round Midnight
$12.05 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great ...

Round Midnight
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. ...

Round Midnight
$14.55 Javon Jackson/Billy Pierce Quintet: Javon Jackson, Billy Pierce (tenor saxophone); Kirk Lightsey (piano); Christian McBride (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
Recorded four days after his debut as a leader, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson's second Criss Cross release is the '90s equivalent of a blowing session. The Berklee College of Music graduate is joined by one of his former teachers, tenor saxophonist Billy Pierce, along with pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Louis Hayes, to play three originals (two of them by Jackson), three jazz originals, and one standard. Jackson and Pierce play together on five of the seven selections, the other two are ballad features for each saxophonist. Both played in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers during the 1980s and also in the groups of other great drummers after Blakey: Jackson with Hayes and Elvin Jones, Pierce with Tony Williams. Jackson has the bigger sound, Pierce has the more aggressive attack, and the first-rate rhythm section keeps the proceedings heated. Favorites include Jackson's "So the Story Goes" and "Not Yet," Dexter Gordon's "Dolo," and Joe Henderson's "Homestretch," all up-tempo and, as the CD's title says, burnin'. This is recommended set of "tenor madness" from two of the instrument's best-known ...

| | Barnyard Playboys Corn Dog Love CD (2003)
Round Midnight
$11.39 On the follow-up to Dumbass on a Rampage, New York's Barnyard Playboys offer up a refreshing new take to their country-tinged hard rock sound. Immediately showing off pop sensibilities not apparent on the disc's predecessor, Corn Dog Love kicks off with the simple, catchy title track. Quickly, though, the band returns to its brash, mind-in-the-gutter humor on the second track, "Turd in the Mail," although the song still shows a band quickly finding its feet, as the song is more compact, precise, and catchy than most of the group's debut. Favoring an acoustic approach on "Last Round" and "Hi You're Dead," the band embraces a more mature approach, while "Psychic" and "Nashville Girl" show a band with one foot in the rock scene and another firmly placed in the country music world. On tracks like "Whiskey Dick Mountain" and "My Heart Is in the Right Place (But My Head Is Up My Ass)," singer/guitarist John Lyons, bassist Adam Freeman, and drummer Joe Baxley execute their sometimes crass sentiments with more artistry than was evident throughout the trio's previous recordings. "13 Steps to the Altar" might hint that marriage might've ...
| | Warren Vache Dream Dancing CD (2004)
Round Midnight
$13.45 Warren Vaché works magic on the cornet, an instrument that has somewhat unjustly fallen out of favor compared to the trumpet or flügelhorn. Vaché, who is joined by the brilliant pianist Bill Charlap along with the solid rhythm of bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Eddie Locke, kicks off the CD with a terrific talkative muted solo in "Close Your Eyes." He's on open horn, backed by Charlap's lush chords, in a lyrical take of "Too Late Now." The easygoing rendition of Charlie Parker's "Quasimodo" (based on the chord changes to the standard "Embraceable You") is the sole number included from the bop era, but it will no doubt please fans of the genre. It's back to muted horn for the brisk run through "Blue Lou," a gem from the swing era. Vaché's lush opening verse sets up the elegant arrangement of "Some Other Time," which also features Charlap at his very best. Tenor saxophonist Harry Allen is added on four tracks, including a dreamy but gently swinging "What's New" and the explosive "Lover, Come Back to Me." Vaché concludes the session by warmly singing the ballad "Not Exactly Paris," adding a chorus ...
| | Tony Bennett Sings The Rodgers & Hart Songbook CD (1999) Bonus Tracks
Round Midnight
$9.05 Recorded from September 28-30, 1973. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald and Ruby Braff.
Soon after he left Columbia Records, Tony Bennett recorded a 20-song Rodgers & Hart set in 1973, superbly accompanied by supper-club favorites the Ruby Braff-George Barnes Quartet, and eventually released on two albums through the private Improv label in 1976 and 1977, respectively. This was a both an act of defiance and a statement of purpose on Bennett's part, for there was perhaps no more dispiriting time for singers of the great standards.
Still, Bennett chose his ammunition well, for Rodgers & Hart's breezy yet indelible romanticism had always suited this singer and also couldn't have been more out of sync with the times. Our time is a different matter however, and Rhino has seen fit to reissue the original 20-song session in fine remastered sound on one CD. The musical mood here is both tender and jaunty, as especially befits the lyrics of Lorenz Hart, for which Bennett has a particular affinity, so much so that he sings little-known extra verses of "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" to nearly epic effect. "Jaunty" also describes the masterly trumpet interjections of the impish Braff, while the quiet swinging pulse of Barnes' guitar lends the whole project an appropriately informal air.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch & Bill Inglot (DigiPrep).
