| | Best Of The Guess Who CD (1977) Bonus Tracks
Salut CD music
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim ...

Salut album
$13.65 CELTIC THUNDER THE SHOW, the audio companion for the popular PBS television special, showcases the five Irish vocalists in their ideal setting, a stage in Dublin. Celtic Thunder thrives on the contrast of its various voices (four tenors and a baritone) creating a surreal musical landscape. Paul Byrum's assured operatic tones on "Remember Me (Recuerdeme)" crest against the doleful pop of Ryan Kelly's "Desperado" and the nascent rumble of Darien McGinty on "Come By the Hills." The concert is tied together by the steady hand of songwriter/pianist Phil ...

$22.35 Superdanzones is an easy-listening, steady mid-tempo session by Cachao and His Tipica Gigante recorded in August, 1961. Most of these ten compositions are led by a flutist (all penned by Cachao, except for "Maximo Gomez" which was written by Pedro Hernández), ...
| | Sunshine Superman: The Very Best Of Donovan CD (2002) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Salut music CDs
$13.15 This collection has the same sequence and tracks as EMI's earlier 2002 release Sunshine Superman: The Best of Donovan, although it sports a title inversion and different cover art. It remains a nice introduction to Donovan's peak years in the mid- to late '60s, including both his Baroque flower power material for Epic Records like "Sunshine Superman" (presented here in an extended version), the fairy tale funky "Hurdy Gurdy Man," and the sublime, Blakean "Sand and Foam," as well as his earlier and more folky recordings for Pye Records (they were released in the U.S. by Hickory Records) like "Catch the Wind," "Colours," the stylistically prescient "Sunny Goodge Street," and the beautiful "Turquoise" (which is as gorgeous as it is ridiculous). The sides included here are among the best examples of Donovan's unique Woody Guthrie meets Timothy Leary style, and having both the Pye and Epic material side by side is a definite plus, making this set (whatever its title) a great introduction to the flower power king. ~ Steve Leggett
Always a strong performer when it came to singles, Donovan was gifted with this near-perfect encapsulation from EMI (which only scrimps on the liner notes and sound). Sunshine Superman: The Very Best of Donovan rightly focuses on his '60s prime and spends 22 tracks doing it, which allows room for a wealth of material beyond the usual; not just late-period flowerings "Atlantis" and "Guinevere" but loafing mid-'60s epics like "Turquoise," "Sand and Foam," and "Sunny Goodge Street" that never topped any charts but gave a splendid pop spin to bucolic British folk music. ~ John Bush
Often called 'the British Bob Dylan' when he first gained recognition in the '60s, singer/songwriter was never a Dylan copyist, nor would he be content to be pigeonholed as one. This brilliant compilation showcases the true original talent that Donovan possessed, both as a songwriter and vocalist, and proves that the only thing he had in common with Dylan was the talent to convey emotion in song. All the hits ...
