| | Fabulous Wailers CD (1959)
Les Lacs Du Connemara CD music
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. Even more amazing is that the tonal crudity of this recording is enhanced even further on the stereo pressings ...

| | Attributed To Cerebral Corps CD (1992)
Les Lacs Du Connemara CD music
$12.39 An ultra-quirky slice of early '90s art rock, Attributed To Cerebral Corps is playful and weird, but it's also got a solid musical foundation. Singer-songwriters Jeff Saltzmann and Bob Vickers aren't interested in weird for weird's sake; the songs are sturdily melodic and lyrically substantial, so that oddball touches like the toy piano anchoring the opening "Sounding Song" are merely colorful details, not ends in themselves. Saltzmann wrote the majority of the songs, with Vickers adding only one, the sweetly power-poppy "Girl From the Carnival." (There's also an interesting pair of freakbeat covers, Fire's immortal "Father's Name Was Dad" and UK Kaleidoscope's "Music," odd choices for 1992.) Saltzmann's often-surreal lyrics and the unexpected left turns the songs often take give ...
| | Los Amigos Invisibles Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space CD (2000)
Les Lacs Du Connemara music CDs
$10.85 AREPA 3000 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. AERPA 3000 was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
Like Dr. Octagon, Los Amigos Invisibles have skipped the banality of Y2K and set their sights on the next millennium on AREPA 3000: A VENEZUELAN JOURNEY INTO SPACE. AREPA is no typical retro boogie-down. The hipster boys from Caracas have followed Sun Ra's travel advice and loaded their hormonal South American blend of acid jazz disco/funk/lounge/house on a rocket ship, bound for grooves of a higher order.
The band launches a suite of sexed-up anthems with the mid-tempo "La Vecina," followed by the sweaty "Que Rico" and "Cuchi-Cuchi." Guest pop songstress Martika blows some breezy Brazilian vocals into the mellow yearning of "Si Estuvieras Aqui" (If Only You Were Here), while "Piazo 'e Perra" is big-chorus, organ-grinder funk. If HAL from the film 2001 were slipped some acid, "Pi Pi Ri" could be the soundtrack to his daydreams. The club-pop jewel "El Barro" glances back over its shoulder to 1985, with singer Julio Briceno picking up the vocoder for some metallic vocal luster. The boys offer a nod to drum-and-bass with the thumping bagatelle, "No Le Metas Mano," yet venture off into more tropical territory on the faded AM salsa of "Llegastes Tarde," and the electro-chintz merengue of "El Sobon."
Los Amigos Invisibles includes: Jose Luis Pardo (guitar); Armando Figueredo (keyboards, background vocals); Juan Manuel Roura (drums).
Additional personnel includes: Martika ...
