Richie Cole (Sax): Richie Cole (alto saxophone); Bobby Howell (tenor saxophone); Chris Jaudes (trumpet); Rick Crane (bass instrument); Wayne Dunton (drums); Don Friedman, Jack Walrath, Ray Mantilla, Rick Stepton, Vic Juris, Nathan Eklund. Personnel: Vic Juris (guitar); Jack Walrath, Chris Jaudes, Nathan Eklund (trumpet); Rick Stepton (trombone); Don Friedman (piano); Ray Mantilla (percussion). Liner Note Author: John Sutton. Recording information: Peter Karl Studios, Brooklyn, NY (04/25/2006-04/26/2006). On this two-CD set, veteran altoist Richie Cole leads his Alto Madness Orchestra. Despite the name of the group, the arrangements are often dance band-oriented, melodic and quite safe. The happy craziness of Cole's earlier recordings is mostly heard in his solos and that of such fine sidemen as trumpeter Jack Walrath, trombonist Rick Stepton, guitarist Vic Juris and pianist Don Friedman. It is good to hear Cole still playing very much in his prime. The up-tempo pieces are generally exciting, at least during the solo segments, but the slower numbers tend to be predictable and a bit dull due to the charts. Perhaps the band book is meant to be played for conservative dancers, but listeners who prefer Richie Cole's more adventurous flights will have to be satisfied with moments of brilliance rather than a classic set. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Rises's Rose Garden
$14.39 Audio Mixers: Tip Wyman; Jeff Kaman; Ray Bardani. Audio Remasterer: Chris Gehringer. The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the ...
| | Jean-Jacques Perrey Moog Indigo CD (1970)
Rises's Rose Garden
$10.95 After establishing himself at the vanguard of electronic music as one half of Perrey & Kingsley, Jean Jacques Perrey continued to pursue his own uniquely space-age brand of humor-oriented pop throughout the 1970s. One of the best examples of his work during this time is Moog Indigo, an album built around Perrey's experiments with the Moog synthesizer. This album has been popular with the electronica crowd thanks to the presence of "E.V.A.," a funky synth excursion that became popular with ...
