Walking with Frankie highlights bluesman Frankie Lee Sims' sessions for the New York-based Fire label in 1960. It would take 25 years before the U.K. label Krazy Kat had the good taste to finally release them. These rare 14 tracks find Sims in raw form, more so than his Specialty recordings of the '50s, with reworkings of "Lucy Mae Blues" and "Jelly Roll Baker." Collectors of gutbucket electric Texas blues should definitely seek this out. ~ Al Campbell

Frankie Lee Sims was one of the great down home Texas blues men of the 1950s. The cousin of Lightning Hopkins, he was very much the same type of artist, along with contemporaries Smokey Hogg and Lil' Son Jackson. Recorded in New York for the enjoy label in 1960, previously unissued "long lost" session (3 tracks were only available on a 1980s bootleg LP) and features remakes of his biggest hits "Lucy Mae Blues" and "Walking With Frankie".

There is plenty of dark music available on CD -- Russian folk, grunge, Peruvian star Rossy War's cumbia triste (sad cumbia), Fiona Apple, Green Day singing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." But the blues, like country, isn't simply dark -- it's dark-humored. The blues laughs in the face of adversity, which is clearly something that Lightnin' Hopkins, Little Walter, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sonny Boy Williamson have had in common with Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and Johnny Paycheck. And it is no coincidence that one sees so many smiling faces on this DVD even though Tail Dragger is addressing plenty of dark subject matter. There is no way that My Head Is Bald (which documents a July 16, 2005, gig at Vern's Friendly Lounge on Chicago's West Side) will be mistaken for an exercise in mindless, naïve, Pollyanna-ish optimism. Tail Dragger is singing about ...

Mississippi Heat is an entertaining and versatile blues combo headed by harmonica player Pierre Lacocque. Whether playing lowdown blues, occasional instrumentals, blues ballads, or more R&B-ish material, Mississippi Heat is full of fire and passion. In addition to Lacocque (who wrote five of the songs on this set), the band features a fine female singer in ...

Chris Thomas King Rise CD  (2006)

Walking With Frankie
CD $13.05
New Orleans musician Chris Thomas King lost both a home and a recording studio when Hurricane Katrina had landfall at the close of summer in 2005, and it's hardly startling that his album Rise takes Katrina and the devastating aftermath of the storm as a central theme. The result is a tremendously elegiac outing, and even when King goes up-tempo, as he does on a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," the song itself is all about incalculable loss and the incredible indifference of contemporary America to its own personal history. Things are drowning and washing away in song after song on Rise, and King isn't afraid to name names. In "Faith," the song's narrator clings to a rooftop as bodies float by and he realizes that President Bush is in a plane over New Orleans in the same instant, and it is a powerful moment that literally defines the notion of differing perspectives. Does he really care, the narrator wonders. Rise deals with loss, death and the hope for rebirth ...

Thin Man Spectres CD  (2008)

"Spectres" is the 4th record from Chicago's The Thin Man.They continue to spin their dusty, twilight tales of lovers, drunks, madmen and gendarmes. They start off with a nod to Motown and Neil Young (featuring the dulcet tones of Ms. Edith Frost), move seamlessly into a horn-drenched blues and then take a rickety old train careening noisily into the heart of Paris.Did we mention accordions? The wistful "Don't Look Back", will have you slow-dancing in your swivel chair, whereas "Polar Bears and Lollipops" is an upbeat toe-tapper featuring floating nooses and singing in the bath. The Thin Man explores many different styles on this record but it never seems forced. The band's personality courses through the songs and ties them together as a unified whole. The members of The Thin Man have been playing together for 5 years.Delusions of grandeur, hatred and egomania have led to only a handful of scuffles, resulting in relatively few injuries. From this they have emerged as a bloody good band - tight and fluid, muscular and supple. They are eager to tour to promote the new record which they are confident is their best work to date. What some people have said about the other records:Greasy Heart:Spin magazine: "An Undertaker Muses..." was selected as one of the 20 Essential Downloads, Dec '06Rockin, rollickin' unlabellable stuff that takes Tom Waits' music and funnels it through the Strokes, as sung by Nick Cave.
