Mozart: Serenata Notturna, Etc / Savall, Et Al
$15.05 It's rare for a band to follow up their watershed album with an album of equal merit, but that's exactly what Brazil's Sepultura did with ARISE. Where 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS thrust the band into the forefront of the international metal scene, ARISE--by matching BENEATH's songwriting, chops, and brilliantly brutal execution--made sure that the band maintained their status.
ARISE's single "Dead Embryonic Cells" proved popular, thanks in no small part to its controversial video. But it's the musicality of this track, and tunes like the title cut and "Altered State," that represent Sepultura's incontestable power. Lead guitarist Andreas Kisser shreds without ceasing, and singer Max Cavelera growls and screams amidst double-bass, jackhammer rhythms. BENEATH THE REMAINS may top more lists as an essential album, but that's largely because of its place in the band's discography. Equally intense and accomplished, ARISE is no less of album for being the successor.
Digitally remastered reissue of the hit Brazilian thrashmetal group's 1991 album on a gold CD with four bonus tracksadded, 'Orgasmatron', 'Intro', 'C.I.U. (Criminals InUniform)' and 'Desperate Cry' (Scott Burns Mix). 13 trackstotal. 1997 Roadrunner Records release.
Recorded at Morrisound Recording, Tampa, Florida. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye.
Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar); Andreas Kisser (guitar); Paulo Jr. (bass); Igor Cavalera (drums).
Additional personnel: Henrique (sythesizer); Kent Smith (sound effects).

Mozart: Serenata Notturna, Etc / Savall, Et Al
$10.49 "To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists, trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage." Thus wrote Joseph Conrad in the opening paragraphs of the story that provides the basis for Ridley Scott's first feature. During the era of the Napoleonic wars, a conflict arises between two of the emperor's cavalry officers when one of them, the aristocratic Lt. D'Hubert (Keith Carradine), is sent by his superior to deliver the message to commoner Lt. Ferraud (Harvey Keitel) that he's to be placed under house arrest for having wounded a man in another duel. Since Ferraud is with a woman at the time, he takes offense at the intrusion and challenges D'Hubert to a duel. Their match, though fierce, is without resolution. Whenever their paths cross, they continue their battle, fighting a series of six duels over the course of 14 years, paralleling Napoleon's major battles of the period. Scott's meditation focuses on the absurd vanity behind the old European code of honor--and the nature of warfare itself. All the distinguishing marks of Scott's later work is already on display here, from the meticulous re-creation of period costume, decor, and behavior to the lush, carefully composed photography.
Two officers in Napoleon's army violently confront each other in a series of series of savage duels. Audio Commentary by Howard Blake and Director Ridley Scott; "Duelling Directors: Ridley Scott and Kevin Reynolds" featurette; "Boy and Bicycle" - Ridley Scott's first short film; Trailer; Storyboards; Photo gallery. Stars Albert Finney, Cristina Raines, Edward Fox, Harvey Keitel, Keith Carradine, Robert Stephens - Director: Ridley Scott.

Mozart: Serenata Notturna, Etc / Savall, Et Al
$9.89 For a band that's known worldwide as the premier purveyors of goth-rock gloom and doom (though hardly incapable of sparkling pop gems), it's no small thing to identify a particular album as their darkest, most disturbing sonic statement. Nevertheless, PORNOGRAPHY surely fills the bill. Reportedly created during a time of great psychological upheaval for group leader Robert Smith, it's a gloriously no-holds-barred existential angst-fest, from the very first line, "It doesn't matter if we all die." Not since Leonard Cohen's SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE had despair been so lovingly ladled into album form, but it's not just Smith's Prozac prescription that was upped during these sessions. His lyrical approach expanded as well, incorporating more stream-of-consciousness poetic imagery. And the rhythmic attack of bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Lol Tolhurst reached new heights of propulsiveness and viscerality as well, whether pounding out a churning syncopation on "The Hanging Garden" or delivering the heavy-hammered nail in the coffin on "A Short Term Effect."
Recorded at Rak Studio One, London, England.
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Laurence Tolhurst (keyboards, drums).
Engineers: Phil Thornally, Mike Nocito, Robert Smith.
